Trade talk: Freo coach happy to have Neale conversation
By Andrew Slevison
Lachie Neale’s future continues to be a talking point.
It emerged last week that Collingwood has shown interest in the star midfielder who is out of contract with Brisbane at season’s end.
There has also been some chatter about a possible shift back to Western Australia to be closer to his children following his much-publicised split from wife Jules recently.
That brings West Coast and Fremantle into the equation.
But would the Dockers even be keen on the two-time Doig Medallist who played 135 games for Freo?
Dockers coach Justin Longmuir says he’d be open to a chat.
“You’re always having conversations about players from different clubs,” he said on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters.
“Especially ones in Lachie’s supposed situation.
“It’s not really for me to comment on now but if that evolves towards the end of the year we’d be happy to have a conversation with him.”
Why West Coast would be open to Neale
Eagles CEO Don Pyke said recently that his club would also be open to chatting with Neale.
The Eagles who could do with some experience in the midfield to help assist their rebuild, and Pyke says they’d like to talk if the 32-year-old is seeking a move back to Perth.
“We’re aware of Lachie’s personal situation and if his desire is to return to WA and continue playing then we would be interested in talking to him,” Pyke said on SEN WA Mornings with Mark Duffield.
“He’s obviously at Brisbane at the moment and he’s a wonderful player. He’s playing some great footy for them and it looks like he’s got more games in him.
“If that’s the decision he makes from a family and personal viewpoint then we’d be keen to have a chat.”
Neale, a South Australian native, spent seven years with the Dockers were he won two best and fairests before joining the Lions in the 2018 trade period.
He has further flourished in Brisbane, winning four Merrett-Murray Medals and four All-Australian blazers.
Neale doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon as evidenced by his average of 30.9 disposals in 2026, including 33 in last weekend's win over Carlton and 42 against Adelaide in Round 7.
