Simpson: The most impressive athlete I have ever seen
By Jaiden Sciberras
The AFL features some of the world’s greatest athletes, and according to Adam Simpson, the Eagles house the most impressive he’s ever seen.
Round 12 saw West Coast cruise to an important fourth victory, beating up on an undermanned Essendon side in WA, with key defender Reuben Ginbey awarded a perfect 10 coaches votes.
A completely dominant performance, Ginbey mounted 17 disposals at 94 per cent, 11 intercepts, seven spoils, six score involvements from full back and five marks across the afternoon, while keeping Nate Caddy goalless for all of three and a half quarters.
The performance prompted Simpson to question where he resides in terms of All-Australian conversations, revealing the athletic prowess experienced Simpson was exposed to during his days as coach.
“I’m a bit bias – is he in the All-Australian squad, or is he in the All-Australian side?” Simpson told SEN’s Whateley.
“He is the most impressive athlete I have ever seen. He wins the time trial – well, he used to when I was there – by 30 seconds. Then he will win the bench press.
“Then we would have a chin-up challenge… a push-up challenge… he wins everything.
“His ability to be tenacious – I saw him on Jeremy Cameron during the Geelong game in Gather Round, he was terrorising Cameron.
“Cameron still kicked four, but the repeat efforts – he has infinity repeat efforts. Infinity.
“I think his ability to win one-on-ones is obviously high-end, and he’s got repeat speed and endurance. There’s nothing he doesn’t have.
“When you play on him, you’ve got to beat him on his merits.”
Despite being slightly undersized for his position, Ginbey has continued to produce top quality performances against the top dog from every opposition team.
At just 21-years-old, the brute force is likely to prove a crucial cog for the rebuilding Eagles going forward.
