Daniher Medal: AFL planning commemorative King's Birthday award
By Sam Edmund
THE AFL is working on the creation of a Daniher Medal to commemorate the life of Neale Daniher.
The medal would be awarded after the annual King’s Birthday game between Melbourne and Collingwood, which has been underpinned by Daniher’s 'Big Freeze at the ‘G' charity event since 2015.
While the Neale Daniher Trophy has historically been awarded to the best player, the Daniher Medal is expected to replace it, potentially with a twist.
While the specifics are yet to be determined, it is possible the two coaches would vote on their player of the day rather than an assembled panel.
A former player and coach who became a national beacon of hope and resilience, Daniher passed away last month after a 13-year battle with motor neurone disease.
