Maher Stable Update: Pride Of Jenni, Jimmysstar & more!
By Ethan Clark
Leading trainer Ciaron Maher has laid out the plans for some of his key stable stars and praised the continued success of a much-loved mare.
He joined Giddy Up with Gareth Hall to discuss the huge win of his star Pride Of Jenni in the Hollindale on the Gold Coast last Saturday, as well as the paths forward for other key names in the Maher camp.
Hear what he said below!
Pride Of Jenni
“She’s a marvel, she’s amazing. The more doubters she has the better she goes. She’s just a great horse. It was good to see her back to her best,” he said.
“She pulled up well; she’s pulled up very good. She’s up there in the sunshine enjoying life.”
So where to next for Jenni?
“Doomben Cup, all going well, will be our next run. She doesn’t have to do much, it’s only a short turnaround. If she presents the same, I’m sure she’ll give them something to catch again.”
“Tony (Ottobre) will make the call ultimately, but, I’ll certainly suggest that while she’s racing well and sound, I can’t see why she couldn’t keep going.”
Jimmysstar
- Jimmysstar is currently the $3 favourite with Sportsbet for the Doomben 10,000 this Saturday.
Maher is confident the track shouldn't be a huge issue for the six-year-old gelding.
“He’s going to be hard to beat, whatever he runs in,” he explained.
“He’s been bright and well. Doomben will be a sharp enough track for him, but he enjoys tracks like Caulfield as well so he’ll be fine.”
Another Wil
- Also set to contest the Doomben 10,000 ($20 with Sportsbet), Another Wil would be lining up in his first competitive race start since September last year where he came 13th in the G1 Sir Rupert Clarke.
“He had two runs that weren’t up to his form, so we gave him six months off and he enjoyed his time. His two trials back have been great and he seems to be back to his old self.”
He will ultimately be aimed at the $3 million G1 Stradbroke at Eagle Farm on June 13.
Land Legend
- Land Legend languished in ninth at Caulfield on the weekend, a result Maher didn't see coming.
“It was a little bit disappointing, his run. I was a little disappointed on Saturday.”
“I’ll see how he is. He can go up in distance, or I can reset for the spring.”
Accidental Bid
- Accidental Bid missed out on a start in the SA Derby as an emergency, he was the favourite prior to being removed. He's now headed to Queensland to continue his prep.
“He’s travelled up (to Queensland) well. It was a bit disappointing he didn’t get a run (in Adelaide).”
“He just seems to be improving all the time… he'll go to the Rough Habit (Doomben, May 16) into the Queensland Derby (Eagle Farm, May 30).”
