"Every chance": Can Ben Hunt make it to 400 games?

Across the NRL’s history, only Cameron Smith has played more than 400 games in the competition.

But Andrew McCullough believes that could change as soon as next year, if Ben Hunt has his contract extended.

Making his NRL debut in 2009, the 36-year-old has been a constant presence within the competition, having played predominantly at halfback for both the Broncos and St George Illawarra, which has resulted in representative appearances for Queensland and Australia.

Having played 20 games or more in all but four of his 18 seasons in the NRL, Hunt currently sits equal third on the all-time game list alongside Daly Cherry-Evans on 361 games played.

Whilst he doesn’t have a contract for 2027, the 2025 Premiership winner has already expressed a desire to play on next season, which would put the magical milestone within reach during next year’s home and away season, should he play every remaining game in 2026, plus one finals game.

But despite those challenges, McCullough thinks that Hunt is every chance of being able to do it.

“He's done it the perfect way,” McCullough said on SEN’s Saturday League Kick-Off.

“Just come in for Origin and play hooker, then get out and then go play in the halves and hide out in their wings (laughs).

“He's every chance of probably getting (to) 400. He's a tough character.

“He came back pretty early from that knee injury against Manly.

“But it's good to have that balance and have those key guys without Renyo (Adam Reynolds) there next year, he'll fit into that void really well and (he’s) well liked amongst the group (and) sets the standard.

“So, we'll see how the next sort of 18 months pans out for him.”

Hunt will make his 362nd appearance at the NRL level when the Broncos play the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

Kick-off takes place from 4:05pm AEST, with SEN having live coverage of the match through Broncos Radio from 4pm on SENQ, SENTrack Brisbane and on the SEN app.
