Signings watch: Will Brimson stay with the Titans?

By Nicholas Quinlan

Gold Coast Titans’ minority owner Matty Johns has spoken on the rumours surrounding AJ Brimson’s potential exit.

Since making his debut in 2018, the England and Queensland representative has played a wide variety of positions across the backs.

Currently, the 27-year-old is playing in the centres but has reportedly expressed his desire to play as a fullback.

However, with Keano Kini being viewed as the club’s long-term option at No. 1, it has created doubts surrounding his future, given he is currently earning in the vicinity of $850,000 per season.

With that report, it is believed the Bulldogs are interested in his services.

Speaking on his future with the club, Johns admitted he hadn't spoken to either Scott Sattler (Director of Football) or Anthony Laffranchi (Head of Recruitment) about it, but did note their salary cap wasn't in the greatest position.

“He's there till 2030,” Johns said on SEN 1170 and SENQ’s The Run Home.

“I haven't had a yarn to Satts (Sattler) and Anthony Laffranchi about it.

“One thing I do know about the Titans is that the salary cap is out of whack.

“And you can see that as far as; you've got a lot of players sitting in the same positions.

“I don't know what their plan is. I mean, it ultimately comes down to Josh (Hannay).”

But Johns admits he is somewhat confused by the reported interest, given the Bulldogs have recently re-signed their starting fullback, Connor Tracey, on a two-year deal.

“It's a tough one,” he continued.

“From what I imagine, AJ wants to play fullback, and by all reports, I don't know exactly what he's on, but they're saying it's fullback money. So, I don't know.

“I mean, it's a strange one with the Dogs.

“I can't for the life of me just work out what is going on there.

“The fact that they re-signed Connor Tracey, and then the moment they re-signed Connor Tracey, they say they're after AJ.

“I don't know, I just can't work out exactly what's going on there.”

The Titans will travel south to Brookvale Oval on Saturday night as they take on the Manly Sea Eagles. Kick-off takes place at 7:35pm AEST.
