Frampton’s remarkable rise from scrap heap to key Pies piece

Collingwood defender Billy Frampton has penned a new deal at the Magpies, committing to the club until the end of the 2028 season.

The contract news comes on the back of some strong form in the 2026 season, where he’s played all of Collingwood’s 13 games, ranking first in the AFL for total one percenters.

Frampton has been the key tall pillar behind one of the competition’s best defences for multiple seasons now, and his rise has surprised many, including Chad Cornes.

The key tall began his career at Port Adelaide in 2015, where Cornes was a development coach. After playing three times for the Power in five years, he was traded to Adelaide for a fourth-round pick.

After 21 games for the Crows across three seasons, he was then dealt to the Magpies for a future-third round pick. Since that move to Melbourne, he’s played his best footy easily.

Having heard the news of his contract extension, Cornes recalled a time when the Power were trying to help the now 29-year-old plan for life after football as they thought he was soon-to-be without a future at the top level.

Dillon: “There’s some news around with Billy Frampton.”

Cornes: “Yes, he’s extended his deal with the Pies, which is great news.

“He has surprised me, Billy.

“I remember sitting down with Nathan Bassett when ‘Bass’ was doing the forwards at Port Adelaide and I was development coach with the forwards.

“He was pretty much trying to help Billy plan his life post-footy.

“But he got the deal at Collingwood, and he’s done so well. He is playing really good footy down back.”

Dillon: “You’ve got to tip your hat, he’s getting the most out of himself.

“He’s a premiership player… and he’s a beautiful kick as well, I’ll tell you that.”

Frampton is set to face his former club, Port Adelaide, this Saturday night at the MCG after successfully having his three-game ban overturned for a dangerous tackle on Melbourne’s Brody Mihocek.
