Gun Giant responds to Lewis’ ‘destroy the club’ claims

Tom Green insists the Giants will still be capable of winning a premiership even if Toby Greene opts to leave.

As the GWS captain continues to weigh up his future, comments have been made regarding a possible exit and how it could destroy the club.

Jordan Lewis said on Fox Footy earlier this week that the Giants would struggle as a club post the Toby era.

“A lot has been made about the Gold Coast Suns and the culture and what that is doing. But, the talk around Toby Greene leaving the Giants, I think that destroys the club,” Lewis said on Monday night.

“You’ve got this player who, albeit, is not playing at his absolute best, but he’s the captain, he’s the culture, he’s the guy that leads from the front. Yet he’s telling us he potentially wants to go and seek premiership success.

“You look at the list demographic for the Giants, and they look like they’re in premiership contention in terms of the talent and all that sort of stuff. I just think you look at that, and you look at the Suns with (Ben) King wanting to leave, (Bailey) Humphrey (noise) still bubbling around and Jed Walter.

“I think that they are in a really vulnerable position to, 1) attract talent, but 2) to convince the talent that’s still there that they are still challenging.”

But teammate Green is not getting too caught up in that sort of chatter.

He was asked by Tim Watson: Would a possible Greene exit disrupt the chemistry at the Giants?

“No, definitely not,” He said on SEN Breakfast.

“We’d obviously love to have Toby. All that stuff about him potentially leaving for premiership success - I don’t think it’s lost on me or the playing group that Toby is a fantastic player and he’d be great to have around - but I still think we’re good enough whether he’s here or he’s not.

“The depth we’re uncovering with players, so once we have a fully healthy team, which we still really haven’t had all year, I think we’re good enough.

“I really back our depth and the players that we have. As much as he’d be great to have - and I don’t want to undersell Toby, we’re a better side with him in it - I still think that we’re good enough and our list is good enough and will develop into being good enough without him.

“I don’t think if we don’t keep Toby around we can’t win the premiership or if he were to leave that it’s sort of a signal that we can’t win it. I’ve got great faith in our group.

“It also hasn’t disrupted anything. This is part of the modern game, players are well entitled to make these decisions about their future. This is also based around Toby’s family. It’s a little bit around success and a little bit about his family and their lifestyle and the support that they need.

“I don’t really resent Toby no matter what decision he makes. I’d love to have him though.”

The injured Green, 25, is contracted with the Giants until the end of 2027.

So, if the skipper were to leave, would that impact Green’s decision to sign a long-term Giants contract beyond his current one?

“Nah, not really. If it was a longer-term contract that I signed with the club, by the time that finishes Toby is likely to have been gone (retired) for a fair few years,” he added.

“My decision will be beyond him. The long-term of any contract signed with the club won’t be based around him.”

Captain Greene and the Giants will be looking to bounce back from two straight defeats when they meet Hawthorn at the MCG on Friday night.
