Legendary football journalist Mike Sheahan thinks Alastair Clarkson made a mistake by speaking to The Age’s Caroline Wilson after his sacking as North Melbourne coach.

Clarko bared all in his chat with Wilson, stating that he and his family’s lives were thrown into turmoil by the decision and North’s public handling of his exit.

With the interview and subsequent article dominating the football news media over the weekend, Sheahan thinks Clarkson didn’t make the right call by airing all of his grievances to ‘the biggest voice in sports journalism in Melbourne’.

While Sheahan credited Wilson for her brilliant work, he thinks Clarkson going to her while he was angry didn’t reflect well on the four-time premiership coach.

He discussed the bombshell article with Tim Watson and Sam Edmund on SEN Breakfast.

Sheahan: “I'm not saying this theory is right, but my theory is that Clarko went to Caro.

“Clarko was angry, and he wanted to set a few things straight, and who better to go to?

“I mean, she's the most opinionated and the biggest voice in sports journalism in Melbourne.

“That's my guess, because I sent a message to Clarko. I still haven't had a response actually, but it was only, ‘I feel for you’.

“He made a mistake. He shouldn't have done that interview. He was angry. You don't do interviews when you're angry.

“That's the best time for a journo. The get from Wilson was very good, she got the most talked-about bloke in town, sat him down and he spilled his guts, but he shouldn't have done it.”

Watson: “He was trying to correct something, though.

“The background to it, as it's been told to me, is that she was going to go much harder about the story that Sam (Edmund) had broken, which was about the Essendon AFLW players being in the lift and Clarko coming into the lift, and expanding on that.

“Then she had spoken to his manager about the fact that this is what she was going to write about, then he (Clarkson) was told by the manager, so he rang her and said, 'Okay (I’ll speak to you)'.”

Edmund: “I'm not overly sure his management were approving him to do the interview either, but he did it.”

Sheahan: “As a journo, did you think it was a good decision?”

Edmund: “He was winning the PR battle regardless.”

Sheahan: “No, it harmed him.”
