Bella Youngberry is quickly making a name for herself in Queensland racing.

The 23-year-old produced a standout performance at Doomben on Saturday, booting home a treble to strengthen her grip on the Queensland metropolitan jockeys’ premiership.

Youngberry now sits four wins clear at the top of the standings, ahead of Ben Thompson and Ryan Maloney.

She joined Gareth Hall on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy up on Tuesday morning to chat about her recent success.

“It was pretty good to notch up my second metro treble, I was pretty pumped,” Youngberry said.

“I thought I might've had a chance to have a stab at my first four-timer but just didn't quite get there.”

Remarkably, Youngberry has only been race riding for two years, having taken an unconventional path into the saddle.

“I’m not from a racing family at all, I was just one of those girls who loved ponies and begged my dad for one,” she said.

“I eventually got a few off-the-track horses from the Sunny Coast and trained them up as my showjumpers, that's what made me fall in love with the thoroughbred.

“When I first started riding trackwork it was the biggest burst of adrenaline ever and I just knew I wanted to get paid to ride horses.”

Youngberry has also placed a major emphasis on developing one of the most important weapons in any jockey's arsenal, the ability to read a race.

“Reading a race is one of the most important things I've focused on throughout my career so far. It was definitely one of my weaknesses when I first started out,” she said.

“Even when I'm not at the races, I'm always tuning in to them to learn more.

“Confidence is something that is so key when you’re a jockey. I was lucky enough to have that support around me in my early days to give me the chance to have that confidence.”

Bella also has a pretty handy connection when it comes to the weather, with her dad being 9 News Queensland weather presenter Gary Youngberry. But the young jockey admits his forecasts don’t always work in her favour.

“Sometimes I need a wet track and he doesn’t let me know it’s going to be dry, so I might be one of those keyboard warriors when he gets the weather wrong,” she joked.

Youngberry has also been racking up plenty of winners for leading Queensland trainer Tony Gollan, with the pair enjoying a strong run of form.

“Lots of people like to remind me how good my stats are with Tony at the moment, and I like to remind him too,” she said.

Just two years into her riding career, Youngberry is already sitting atop the Queensland metropolitan premiership.

And with the likes of Thompson and Maloney chasing her down, the young jockey has plenty more to ride for before the season is out.
