Maher Stable update ahead of loaded Saturday
By Jasper Cormick
Ciaron Maher Racing’s Assistant Trainer Jack Turnbull joined Gareth Hall on SENTrack & RSN's Giddy Up ahead of a enormous Saturday for the stable. Including 36 acceptances across Flemington and Randwick with some genuine superstars set to run.
Tempted (Randwick Race 9)
As Maher’s superstar sprinter looks towards a battle with Ka Ying Rising in the Everest, she will run in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes this Saturday to consolidate her preparation.
“She is excellent from all reports … I know Ciaron (Maher) is very happy,” Turnbull said.
“She is an imposing figure.
“Hopefully she goes there (Premiere Stakes) is as dominant or more dominant (as last start) and then can tackle the big fella in the Everest (Ka Ying Rising).”
Drawing a wide barrier, Chad Schofield will likely settle off the pace and rely on the dynamic turn of foot.
“The ability to quicken is amazing, she’s just got so much pace,” Turnbull said.
“He (Chad Schofield) will be able to get himself out of a hole if they do find themselves in one.”
Tempted is currently priced as a short priced $1.65 in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes at Randwick on Saturday.
Zahrann (Flemington Race 8)
Hall queried Turnbull on what are the expectations for this Saturday’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes for the up-and-coming star stayer.
“It is his first opportunity against the big boys,” he said.
“He has got good wet track form, and he was very dynamic when he won last start.
“We are confident he will swim.
“It would be one of those races to win to really put your foot down with authority … its exciting.”
Zahrann is currently priced at $15 in the feature at Flemington.
Middle Earth (Flemington Race 8)
Hall asked if Middle Earth remains the stables’ best chance in a Melbourne Cup?
“At the moment you would have to,” affirmed Turnbull.
“Middle Earth is a different operator to a few of our others, he needs 2400m.
“This time around he is seasoned, he is bigger, he has got a little bit of weight, but he has had that experience obviously running a big race last year.”
Middle Earth is quoted at $41 for this Saturday’s Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, but looking ahead to the Melbourne Cup futures is priced at $31 with Sportsbet.
Saint George (Flemington Race 8)
The mighty grey who continues to just really well since returning this prep looks to Saturday’s feature to continue his form, but the query is strongly around the weather.
“He is not going to love it if it is a heavy track,” Turnbull said.
Saint George is priced at $14 for the Turnbull Stakes.
Light Infantry Man (Flemington Race 8)
“We’ve drawn the gate to just pop out and roll, you are not giving him a squeeze, and you are not trying to lead I wouldn’t suspect,” Turnbull said.
“We will let the pace form around us and just keep him happy.
“He is a horse that doesn’t possess a turn of foot, he just lengthens and sustains.
“We are now in a position fit and third up, right trip, to be turning the screws.”
Light Infantry Man is much wider in the Turnbull Stakes market at $34.
Tennessee Bound (Flemington Race 5)
Tennessee Bound will attack the Group 2 Rose of Kingston Stakes this Saturday with a slight weight claim on key rival Gold Coast Belle.
“She is going to get her conditions, one of a couple on Saturday in our team that are going to thrive in that ground if we do get it,” Turnbull said.
“But she has found her race.”
Tennessee Bound is quoted currently at $5.50.
Ten Commandments (Flemington Race 10)
Turnbull has plenty of confidence in gelding who is flying at the moment coming off an amazing win last start.
“If we get the rain, with the weight he has got, he will just continue to firm,” he said.
“He will be one I look forward to later in the day.”
Ten Commandments is priced at $5.50 in the last at Flemington.
Jimmy Recard (Race 10 Randwick or Race 9 Flemington)
Turnbull provided an update on one of the cult heroes of racing ahead of his long awaited return to the races.
“He looks a million,” he said.
“Very imposing horse who loves soft ground.
“He is first up off a long break, but trackwork has been good.
“He is a classy horse when right.”
Jimmy Recard is currently nominated at Randwick Race 10 ($9) and Flemington Race 9 ($20).
Piggyback + Juja Kibo + Mr Monaco + Jennivamoose (Flemington Race 7)
Turnbull gave an update on his stayers headed towards the golden ticket The Group 3 Lexus Bart Cummings this Saturday at Flemington.
“Piggyback is in good shape and has arrived safely,” he said.
“Juja (Kibo) we are still deciding with, so we will have to see.
“Mr Monaco looks well, was good first up, didn’t make a lot of ground last start.
“If you just go off that first up run, he is obviously a decent staying prospect, he gets through the ground.
“She (Jennivamoose) loves it, I am confident she will go well, she was good last start against one of ours Shockletz, she gets through the ground.
“She tends to race best off slower run races, so it will be interesting to see how much pace is injected.
“But second time at the trip, fourth up, there is a lot to like about it.”
In Race 7 at Flemington; Piggyback is priced at $12, Juja Kibo at $5.50, Mr Monaco at $27 and Jennivamoose rounds out Mahers horses in the market at $8.50.
The Next Episode (Race 6 Flemington)
The Group 2 Danehill Stakes will see Maher’s three-year-old colt take on the well esteemed Natural Fling on Saturday in the wet, which may suit The Next Episode.
“He is very effective in the ground,” Turnbull said.
“If we do get a drop of rain it is going to really help us.
“He just looks so well, he has picked up in the last couple of weeks.”
The Next Episode is priced at $4.20.
Stable Mail Play:
On SENTrack and RSN’s Stable Mail with Gareth Hall, Turnbull opted to put his $100 on The Next Episode (Race 6 Flemington) into Ten Commandments (Flemington Race 10) at $23.10.
All prices thanks to Sportsbet.
