Kane's Countdown: The 10 footy stories on repeat
By SEN
Kane Cornes’ countdown is in, and this time he’s sharing the stories he’s sick of hearing on repeat.
Cornes listed some of the stories we every season from international games to mid-season trade periods.
Check out Kane’s big top 10 from SEN's Summer Run below.
“I did read in the Herald Sun today about Melbourne's plan to move to Caulfield on hold,” Cornes said on SEN's Summer Run.
“I am sick of reading about Melbourne and Caulfield and their potential move. So, it had me thinking about the footy stories that never go anywhere that we just repeat.”
10 – Port Adelaide’s prison bar jumper
“I think this would have been in the top three, but I think we've also like kind of sorted it. Remember how much we used to speak about that?
“I was probably guilty of it because I wanted them to wear it. I think they deserve to wear it. Now I think they're allowed to wear it once a year in a showdown. They certainly wore it last year.
“So I think we've sort of taken the heat out of that debate and it probably helps that Ed is sort of not in his official role at Collingwood as well.”
9 – Illicit drugs policy
“The illicit drugs policy needs to change.
“And I'm very much guilty of speaking about this a lot, but that is a story that we speak about and have done for the last 20 years and will continue to do so when issues like the front page of the paper bob up today.”
8 – Should the home team get the home final?
“When finals roll around and a team that has a home ground earns a home final. Should the home final be played at their home, JJ? Should it?
“Geelong fans. Western Bulldogs fans. St Kilda fans. North Melbourne fans. I'm with you. I think it should, but we'll be speaking about that again if that situation happens.”
7 – Red cards
“Should we have red cards? Should players be sent off for a shocking incident? That'll happen once a year. On repeat.
“The game is cleaner, but someone will say that. And I've definitely said that before in the past, as has Leigh Matthews.”
6 – Best of three Grand Final
“Someone in Sydney, when they qualify for a Grand Final, will suggest that it should be best of three. Home, away, whatever.
5 – AFL going international
“Should we go to India? Should we go to China? Should we go to New Zealand? Should we go to Vegas? That'll come up. That'll come up every year.”
4 – Should umpires be full-time
“We know that umpires spend about three hours working on their craft a week, which for me is about 20 hours too little for the amount that they get paid and the conditions that they are blessed to have.
“Should they be full time? We speak about full-time umpires a lot. Like work on their fitness, work on their throw ins, work on their decision-making. Try and get some young ones and some fresh blood so that our best umpires aren't 48 years of age.
“Surely, they get a full-time wage, they should work full-time hours.”
3 – Should we scrap the father-son?
“We haven't decided (if we’re going to scrap it) so that means that we will continue to talk about it on repeat every single year,” Cornes said.
2 – Mid-Season Trade Period
“It'll be debated, the AFLPA will say no, so then we'll talk about it for the next 20 years and there'll be no movement on that.”
1 – Night Grand Final
“The most repeated story that we speak about is, should we move to a night or twilight grand final? Now, I'm certain this is going to happen, and I hope it does so that we can stop talking about it.”
