Hacer Group William Reid Stks (G1)
In an exciting finish, less than three lengths separated the field of ten horses at the post. The winner Spirit Of Boom settled a bit closer than usual, about seventh, three wide with cover. He then moved up (wide-out) approaching the turn, got to the lead at the 100m and lasted by the narrowest of margins in a deceptive finish to score his first Group One event. Fontelina was fifth between runners to the home turn. He was blocked on straightening, got a late split on passing the 100m and finished fast, late, to just miss in a photo for an unlucky second. Unpretentious was slowly away, raced in eighth place between runners before going wide on turning for home. He then ran on for a good third, beaten only a neck. Gregers was quickly way and raced outside the leader (Samaready) before going to the front on straightening. She then fought gamely for a closeup fourth. Shamexpress was about fifth but caught wide most of the way. He challenged at the home turn and battled on quite well for fifth, beaten half a length. The outsider Gig ($201) was last in the ten-horse field to the 600m, moved up wide at the turn and surprised by making ground for a good sixth (beaten just under two lengths). The Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Fawkner was near last to the turn and made good ground along the rails for a most pleasing first-up seventh (beaten two lengths). Thump was handy all the way, put in a run at the 600m but only battled on from the home turn for eighth while the favourite Samaready ($4.25) was ridden hard in the early stages to lead. Set the pace to the home turn, but dropped out under pressure to finish ninth in a disappointing performance with It Is Written ($51) finishing last. *ANZ
