Rotorua Stakes (G3)

Sex: FM Type: OPEN

This G3 at WFA over 1400m for fillies and mares only saw a relatively compact finish with all thirteen runners covered by seven lengths especially when you consider the winner Sleeping Beauty scored by a length and a half and the last runner home was detached by almost three lengths. The second finisher to the second last runner across the line (ten runners) were all covered by just two and a half lengths The result mirrored the track bias all day and the first three turning for home filled those positions at the post. The track was a very tacky Slow8 and no winner came from too far away and too wide on the track with that clear bias staying in place all day. The inside lane or two was not a winning strip but a sweet spot of three-off to six-off maximum provided all the winners on a track that when it gets wetter always sees a mass migration to the outside fence lanes. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (one-off the inside and four lengths clear), fourth (five-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), third (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (six-off the inside and a length from the leader), fourth (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), second (three-off the inside and half a length from the leader), led (four-off the inside and a length ahead) and led (three-off and two lengths ahead). Sleeping Beauty sat fourth wide and moved up third wide across the top before taking the lead before the home turn and held them all out comfortably at the line. She clocked a tepid 1:25.86 and it tellingly was the slowest time all day at 1400m by three lengths with three other races held at the trip for a decent comparison sample. It was the ninth win in twenty-two starts for the rising 7yo mare and her first win at Blacktype after two G2 placings and a Listed placing. All of her successes have come on rain-affected ground from Dead to Heavy footing. Te Toro Pearl at just her eighth start and first Blacktype attempt ran second after sitting sixth wide and moving up deeper fifth across the top before striding into third turning for home. The rising 5yo mare tried hard and got into second the final 10m passing the leader on settling in the rising 7yo Donna Anne Billy, which was also getting her first Blacktype placing after two failed distant efforts this season. Back In A Flash at just her ninth start jumped a clear favourite and was a luckless fourth at the line but it did show the field lacked genuine depth for sure. The rising 5yo mare was fifth the inside on settling then lost her spot to be eighth across the top then worked off near the home turn. She kept coming well the run home between runners and should have finished second in all honesty. Pretty To Sea settled back and was tenth turning for home but fought on well to end up fifth beaten just over two lengths. Sasso Corbaro also fought on well after racing seventh or eighth wide out while Hasahalo settled down last then swept up deep near the home turn and battled on for seventh beaten three lengths. Tomelilla was just a fair eighth after ending up midfield surrounded on settling while Platinum Command fresh up was the ninth of an improver coming from last turning for home. The rest were just under or four lengths from the winner at the line and one runner Chicane dropped out a tad to be almost seventh lengths from the victor. This was a Listed level at best field and the footing presented played a major role in the finish. Expect some of these mares if kept going over Winter to show some form on looser footing as almost all of this line up wet trackers.
