This G1 2yo over 1400m saw the odds on Yourdeel score and capture the juvenile feature double for the season. In a tight finish where the first four home were covered by less than a length Yourdeel wanted it the most the closing stages. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (one-off the inside and half a length ahead), eighth (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), ninth (on the fence and three lengths from the leader), fourth (five-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fifth (six-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), seventh (seven-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), led (on the fence and a length ahead), sixth (four-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and led (one-off the inside and a length clear). Yourdeel got back seventh on settling in a race that was solidly run up front so they were always going to come back sooner or later. The gelding had only won up until now on wet ground or at least cutting out footing but today got the job done on Good3 footing. Once angled wide on the home turn he was asked to lengthen and took a while to wind up fully before the big bounds happened and he surged to lead with 15m to go. He won by a long neck and clocked a tidy 1:22.98, which compared well to the Listed Open Handicap held following this where the leader won in 1:22.36 (four lengths superior). Yourdeel was winning his fourth race in six starts and three of those have come at G1 twice and G3 once. The fact the gelding has now on all four types of footing augurs well for his 3yo career but whether he is a true top of the ground galloper still remains to be seen. Aretha ran a game second after settling down six the outer and she surged late like the eventual winner. The filly this year has been a revelation with her three starts in 2019 having returned a G2 win and two G1 placings. Bella Mente ran a career high when third after sitting second the outer then being pushed out wide the home turn by the trailer Equinox, which was a stablemate of the winner. The filly dug deep from third still at the 200m to be second at the 100m and only lost the runner up spot the final 10m. She has not run a poor race lifetime. Aalaalune is still a maiden but ran on well for a very close up fourth after she got back eighth on settling and her turn must come soon surely. She might try a juvenile mile at Blacktype before being spelled but either way next season is her oyster. First Rock set the strong pace and was run over the final 15m but gave a good sight and she is another youngster to come good late Summer and early Autumn. Glinda Goodwitch ran on well late from the rear and the maiden filly has a good future. Equinox did not run out the 1400m after trailing the leaders plus he may need some cushion or cut in the ground to let go fully. Holymongolemperor ran second equal favourite and after a slow start got well back but ran on eyecatchingly late and will keep. Disregard the commentator when watching the replay saying gee he caught them well in regards to the start as that was simply not true at all in a G1 race with Aalaalune and Holymongolemperor clearly slow away (see stipes report to back that up) and the rear duo at the jump. It clearly matters and for this pair it cost Aalaalune a G1 placing at least and Holymongolemperor should have been much closer at the finish. The Fugitive was not too bad from second last on settling after being eased back early from a wide draw. Bavella is a total forgive as the filly ran out of room ahead completely the closing stages when having something to offer. She raced handy the outer then went the inner and was fourth at the 200m then found slammed doors ahead badly and was throttled down the closing stages. Qiji Spirit ran last by a margin and was outclassed. This looks a rich source for next season in the 3yo classics for both the male and female ranks with the fillies in particular looking good. Holymongolemperor already looks a Derby prospect.
