This Listed Open Handicap over 1400m saw an all the way winner upsetter in The Bandito having his first ever run in this grade and first ever Blacktype attempt. The Bandito is a well-tried 7yo that prior to today had raced forty-one times for just three wins but worked to the lead and held on by a short head in this clocking 1:22.36. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (one-off the inside and half a length ahead), eighth (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), ninth (on the fence and three lengths from the leader), fourth (five-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fifth (six-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), seventh (seven-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), led (on the fence and a length ahead), sixth (four-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and led (one-off the inside and a length clear). The first six runners home were separated by less than a length. After working up wide early then taking the front The Bandito had a length lead after 400m and was holding that buffer until the final 100m then fell in to win. Beefeater was wide before going up outside the leader and tried hard but just missed carrying 2.5kg more though had his chance and should have been able to beat his far inferior conqueror. Magnum the clear favourite was eased back early after being wide and settled down sixth then fifth the outer and kept coming the run home but he missed too narrowly being beaten a short head and half a head. Again like the runner up he should have been able to pick the inferior leader but could not. Sweepstake raced fourth the inner and fought hard to the line to finish fourth but was beaten less than half a length in total. La Bella Rosa was on the pace early then settled third before being fourth at the 300m and tried hard when fifth at the line beaten just over half a length. Monrecur ran home gamely from last on settling for sixth and was not beaten very far at all but was given too hard a task by the rider standing up her rivals too much turning for home. Tomelilla is a total forgive after settling back and then being held up badly the closing stages when having heaps to offer. Calligraphy settled down fifth then sixth the inner but had no real finish the final 200m and even though the rider throttled back the closing 50m with the room ahead marginal the mare was not going to be any threat anyway. This was not a very strong field and the fact The Bandito could win this says more about the rest as he was having a first ever run in Open Class let alone a Listed race. The whole field at the finish was covered by less than three lengths and the likes of Tomelilla was luckless. Run this race ten more times and you get six or more different winners such was the evenness in ability terms but The Bandito winning was a complete one-off as the outsider of the field needed everything to go his way today and it did including the photo finish.
