The winner of this G2 at WFA over 14000m was the even money favourite Tavi Mac, which raced fifth between runners and them surged the run home to lead at the 250m. The 5yo gelding was clear at the 100m and won by a length and a half in 1:24.02 to record his tenth win from fifteen starts. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were third (three-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), fifth (four-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and length and a half in front), fourteenth (one-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), second (one-off the inside and a neck from the leader), ninth (one-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), fifth (three-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), sixth (four-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader) and third (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader). Tavy Mac has won on all types of footing and his two misses from paying a dividend were a close up sixth at G1 under WFA and a luckless close up fifth in a Benchmark 72 at his fourth outing when going for four wins in a row. The gelding is not very big but he puts in at each outing regardless of the footing. He had won his two Listed races before this so to get a G2 success was befitting since he ran a good second in this grade over September. Callsign Mav fresh up ran a game second and this G1 proven at WFA galloper was wide early then went up second the outer and led briefly at the 300m before the winner swept past him. The 4yo has only had three runs this season so far for a G1 win, a G1 third and today a G2 second, so is clearly up to the top grade. Third home was the visiting n South Island mare Kiwi Ida, with the Australian bred running on gamely from sixth the outer on settling. She is a dual G2 winner and he has won at G3 and Listed level as well but her highest achievement is a G1 third to the recently retired Te Akau Shark in a G1 at WFA over 1400m at Te Rapa on February 20 of last season. Motivation ran on well from last turning for home for fourth beaten just over three lengths while Aimee's Jewel, after racing fourth the inner, reached third at the 100m before being swamped the last 20m. Credit Manager fought on okay for fifth after being in the rear duo on settling. Amarula ran second last beaten over five lengths while Tavis Court ran last after racing in the lead mostly and then being headed early the run home. He was found to have bled and is now banned for three months. The class act of the field won the race and the next two best performed runners filled the placings so the race panned out as expected but it was not a taxing event at all. The time of 1:24.01 was tepid overall as the winner of the first race, a maiden in a 3yo field, ran 1:23.94.
