This G2 mile for 3yo fillies saw an unbeaten runner make it six-from-six but the field was the weakest in depth perhaps ever seen for this event. Late in the season some of these fillies may turn out okay but at this halfway juncture this was a tepid field indeed bar the winner and a handful only of others. Volpe Veloce, the Australian bred filly is yet to meet a decent strength field but it is hard to knock her when undefeated as you can only beat what you meet. She is usually on the speed but to make sure she runs a mile and more is being relaxed so she can finish off with more purpose and today was no exception. After settling midfield the inner the filly got closer without going around a rival across the top and eased out before the home turn before surging up ominously at the 400m. She led narrowly at the 300m and looked set to stride clear but had trouble shaking off the eventual runner up in Storytime and in fact had to lift to get the job done by half a length in 1:35.16. Volpe Veloce has won all her six outings and now has a G2, G3 and Listed success so to get the set needs a G1 and that will be her main aim from now onwards it seems. Storytime ran a game second and should progress further after a G3 and now G2 placing at her last two starts each time behind Volpe Veloce. Date Night finished third having cleared maidens at her last start and is bred to keep improving with racing. Devise ran an honest fourth but hade every chance and she may be more a middle distance type in the Autumn and need more cushion or cut in the ground. Glass Slipper was ridden upside down as usually a run on filly and today was sent up outside the leader and wilted to finish fifth beaten three and a half lengths. She is still a maiden so may need to get a soft kill sooner rather than later as just as winning becomes a habit so does continual defeat. Galloping Gerte was running on late as was the maiden She Brings Joy and it is the latter that is the takeaway from the race as having scope galore. The rest either were outclassed badly or never liked the harder ground or got pole-aced across the top or a combination of all three. This was a weak depth field for this G2 mile that usually draws a far superior line up and more serious formlines too that can be trusted. Volpe Veloce now will be trying to keep her unbeaten record intact but cherry picking soft kills gets harder from this point onwards though the depth overall this season in the 3yo ranks is well down at this stage. Several in this can bloom in the Autumn as the distances increase but the one filly from the race that has upside galore is in fact still a maiden in She Brings Joy. There is a win at very short notice in the daughter of Sebring and Stakes success is not beyond her either.
