On a rather tricky off track at Ellerslie the Listed 1200m Open Handicap winner was a resuming 4yo in Savile Row that got up in a tight finish. Savile Row had run three times in Australia over the Spring and been hopelessly outclassed twice at G1 and G2 and barely passable at G3 so the return to New Zealand and inferior depth showed big time. His win today was his first in over a year and saw him come from the rear down the outer and just get up by a flared nostril on the line in 1:10.89 to record his third win in a dozen starts. It was his first success today as a 4yo and whether he is just a sprinter or a sprinter-miler will be known over the Summer and Autumn if kept racing in New Zealand. He carried the 58kg no worries and looks suited to the New Zealand race field depth. Passing Shot sat outside the leader and looked sure to win when getting to the front narrowly at the 100m only to be beaten in a photo finish that required many looks and enhancements to detect a pixel margin. He has not won a race since April of 2016 so the camera on the line is not his friend it would seem. Chambord was unlucky again when third beaten a nose and half a head and seems to find bad luck like an equine magnet. He got back on the inner and when angled out the run home with plenty to offer had to be checked at the 250m before unleashing in clear air the final 100m. Joy Anna set the pace and was only run over late to finish fourth to be beaten three-quarters of a length. Volks Lightning is an improver after being fifth the outer surrounded and then coming through to third at the 200m before wilting a tad. He finished firth beaten a length and three-quarters. Rocanto was average from the trail and Chachar never ran on from the back at all. Somethingvain was trapped wide fifth and never got in so despite moving up fourth across the top and into third briefly turning for home the effort had to take a toll. Mahalo was outclassed and never cleared the rear on settling. This was a dubious field as the sprinting depth in New Zealand is very poor at the moment and the first two home separated by a nose had not won in a year or twenty months and still waiting. Savile Row if kept to New Zealand racing is more than competitive in sprint and mile racing plus he can race forward at the latter trip so does not have to be a track bias victim.
