This G2 for fillies and mares saw the Australian bred South Islander in Kiwi Ida score by half a length and get her hattrick of victories having won an Open Handicap at Riccarton and then a G2 at Awapuni against all comers. The winners today at Ellerslie and where they turned for home in race order were fourth (five-off the inside and a length from the leader), sixth (four-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fifth (three-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), seventh (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader) and sixth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader). Her record coming into and including today was forty-one starts for fourteen wins and she clocked 1:23.47 in the process. Kiwi Ida would have one more start after today and run third at a G1 for all comers behind the dominant Te Akau Shark and the leader The Mitigator. Volpe Veloce, like the winner Australian bred, ran on game for second from well back and wide carrying the topweight of 58kg. She would struggle home for sixth at G1 in her only start since that the winner Kiwi Ida ran third in. Her last win came back in the Autumn of 2019 at G2 or two seasons ago. Rondinella ran on strongly for a close third and at her next start after today failed badly at Otaki at G1 under WFA on a less than presentable track behind Advantage then ran a decent sixth at G1 under WFA at Ellerslie over 2000m, also behind Advantage. Santa Monica was less than a length from the winner in fourth place after being wide and working forward and then leading at the 300m. He run was massive for a mare that had last paid a dividend in March of 2019 when third at G3 and had last won a race, the G1 Railway on Jan 1 2019 at 53kg when paying $77. A gap of over three lengths was found to the rest headed by the rank outsider by miles in Pasabache, which was over two to one rougher than the second to last outsider in the field. Pierina ran on late for eighth and Princess Kereru was a disappointing ninth considering her form. All in all it was solid result for the mares only with the best trio the first three home and an out of form G1 winner from the season before a close up fourth.
