This G3 3yo only mile drew a very weak ten horse field that included five maidens and two of them had never even paid a dividend before. The track at Otaki was insanely biased towards on pacers all day and nearly provided a perfect eight from eight winners that led turning for home. The home turn honour call of where they turned in was third, led, led, led, led, co-leader wide, led and led and the first race victor came up third just a neck from the leaders turning in. This race ended up a turgid affair and a crawl midrace as no rider seemed game enough or confident enough in their mounts ability to put some pressure into the contest. The quinella was Australian breds and both were maidens in Crown Prosecutor and Swords Drawn with both being beaten home by rivals again last time out but turning the tables today. Crown Prosecutor once he got the lead was allowed to do trackwork midrace and made it a 400m sprint home only that he held on by a neck to record an embarrassing 1:37.03 for the mile. A standard (that means average only) maiden can run 1:36 for a mile to give some perspective just how pressure-free this G3 was. It was the first win obviously for Crown Prosecutor and his first attempt at Blacktype. He had run third in his lead up race behind Sahar, a rival again today, that ran a weakfish sixth. Swords Drawn sat outside the winning leader and never applied a scintilla of pressure as his rider did not need too. The colt got beaten into second at his prior start by Sacred Judgment, a rival again today that could only run fourth as the favourite. Sentimental Miss was one of just two fillies in the race and after being tardy and last away she recovered through to be sixth the fence on settling. Once she worked off and through early the run home to be fourth the filly took an eternity to wind up from third at the 100m. She was coming at the 50m but missed by a neck and a nose. Sacred Judgment trailed the leaders to the home turn and had every possible hope and looked decidedly one-paced in a sprint home. Roc Ya Sox was back and wide all the way so did okay to keep coming for fifth beaten less than two lengths and his effort put to shame a few in the race. Sahar was weak in finishing sixth beaten over two lengths after racing fifth the outer and having every possible hope, so is another runner exposed today as one-paced in a sprint home. Guillada a maiden filly ran on late from last at $54 to be beaten just over five lengths so should win a race back to her proper grade. Yossarian hung in the running and did not seem to want to be there while the other two runners got beaten nine and over eleven lengths. This was not a real G3 race and once you factor in the blatant manmade track bias and how slow they ran, the race is meaningless. It was in effect a G3 trackwork gallop. The race before this saw a Benchmark72 winner clock 1:36.88 and win with the Australian bred 4yo Rhinestone Cowboy sitting wide sixth then fourth wide working and scoring by two lengths. It is hard to envisage a G3 mile on this type of footing or in fact upgraded ever being allowed to run over 1:37 and the first two home only having to run a closing 600m in 35 seconds to form the quinella.
