This Listed 2yo over 1100m under set weights saw an Australian bred in Unition win on debut and the colt was well backed too. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were led (two-off the inside and half a length in front), fifth (four-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), second (two-off the inside and a neck from the leader), third (two-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), fifth (six-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), third (three-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), led (on the fence and a neck in front), third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader) and tenth (five-off the inside and four lengths from the leader). The track presented was greatly biased towards on pacers as just one runner all day came from off the pace and that was in the last race as the winner came from tenth turning for home and four lengths from the leader. The other eight races saw six of them come from first, second or third turning for home and two came from fifth but no worse than two and a half lengths from the leader. The times all day were okay but nothing exceptional on a supposed Good3, which just adds to the bane of betting that is manmade track bias. Unition sat second the outer and led at the 400m then held them all out to score by a short neck in 1:04.59 with the fight he showed the closing stages a good will to win sign. It is rare for New Zealand trained youngsters to win at Blacktype on debut let alone start in such events but smaller field sizes and fewer owners in recent years now mean more are getting a start in them. Hasstobemagic raced fifth surrounded and the filly came through with purpose to reach second at the 200m but could not overhaul the winner. Amor Fati led up and once headed by the winner tried to dig deep and never chucked in the towel from third at the 200m. She too was on debut like the winner and this now looks a trend if these Blacktype events do not attract anywhere near full fields plus only a few stables nowadays seem to have runners at this the youngest age. Cool Aza Beel the odds on favourite trailed the leaders on the inner and was still held up at the 200m and then when in clear air at the 100m and certain to get third money near the line the rider inexplicably sat up and finished fourth. The experienced rider Opie Bosson got three weeks for the indiscretion that can only surely be a monumental brain fade on raceday such was the dreadful way it must have looked to punters atop an odds on pop. The colt would end up winning four of his six starts and this was the lone time he was not top three plus one of the wins came at G1 and another came in the rich Karaka Millions. Cool Azabeel was never beaten in four trials as well, so to miss the top three in this still defies belief to this very day. Tivaan Warrior ran home rather well from last and wide for fifth while Escudo fought on well for sixth after being ninth turning for home. Johnny Canuck was a not too bad seventh beaten four lengths and looks to need more time. The rest got beaten over five lengths and up to fourteen lengths. The winner Unition has upside galore and should come back a decent 3yo. He should not have won the race as Cool Aza Beel got somehow blocked in an over 500m long run home when odds on and would turn out to be the top juvenile in the land with the earlier finish to the season than normal due to Covid19.
