The winner of this G3 for fillies and mares only over 1400m was Aimee's Star which came from dead last on settling closer in and buried her rivals to win by half a length in 1:24.51. It was the fastest 1400m of the day by almost half a second (three lengths). The winners and where they came from on the home turn were eleventh (eight off the inside and four lengths from the leader), fifth (four-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), fifth (five-off the inside and a length from the leader), fifth (five-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (two-off the inside and a length from the leader), ninth (one-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), sixteenth (on the fence and six lengths from the leader), led (three-off the inside and a neck in front), tenth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), seventh (six-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fifth (one-off the inside and length and a half from the leader) and second (five-off the inside and neck from the leader). Only one leader won in all of this meeting today so the run on types had a field day. Aimee's Star was kept closer in the run home and made up considerable ground at the 400m and was into fourth at the 200m and one-off still surging. The 4yo mare then sustained her run to lead at the 25m and win her third race in five outings plus she recorded her first at Blacktype today. The runner up Irish Girl was massive in defeat because she was back and very wide away then got used up markedly to loop the field and lead then kicked clear halfway up the run home only to be caught late. Irish Girl was going for her fourth win in a row so was in form and thriving since coming to the South Island as part of a big North Island team for the Rae and Williams-Tuhoro team. If this normal front runner had begun cleanly then her first outing in a Blacktype event would have been a winning one rather than a runners up position. Excelleration ran on strongly for third from well back and wide and grabbed the Blacktype spit the last 25m. Nellie Bly was a huge fourth after being back and very deep throughout and then coming wider turning for home. She ran on very gamely and to get fourth on the post. Fifth home was Belle Fascino that raced fourth or fifth and reached second at the 200m with the 7yo mare fighting on well to be beaten just over a length and a half. There was a gap back to sixth in Severine of nearly fourth lengths to the winner after she had moved up wide with cover to be handy after 400m. The next five mares all came home covered by less than half a length with creditable performances by the running on Scarfi and Karalino. The race was also notable for the epic flop of the $2.10 favourite Kiwi Ida that settled back and never fired a shot and ended up third last and beaten over seven lengths. The winner Aimee's Star looks untapped but kudos must also go to the runner up Irish Girl, also a 4yo mare, that was going for her fourth win in a row.
