James & Annie Sarten Mem. Stks (G2)
The G2 3yo event saw the Australian bred gelding Need I Say More bolt in after leading up and relishing the blatant track bias that was Te Rapa almost all day. The gelding soon led and then put a hole in them to be well clear the run home and was four lengths ahead at the 200m scoring eased up by two and a half lengths in 1:22.06. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were third (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), tenth (six-wide and five lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), led (two-off the inside and a neck from the leader), led (one-off the inside and two lengths clear), fifth (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader) and led (two-off the inside and a neck in front). The track bias as per usual was heavily favouring leaders and on pacers with seven of the nine winners turning for home running first, second or third and of those five actually led turning in. Need I Say More was eased up late so much that it could have been five lengths to be honest. Today was his fourth win in five starts and his only defeat came when fourth two starts ago, when trapped wide working in a G2 and ironically he himself was a track bias victim that day. He is lethal when he leads or sits second the outer and has won four of his five runs using this tried and true formula. His G2 easy win today goes with a pair of G3 wins and he has also won for three different riders showing he is not that hard to handle being a point and prevail type. Bourbonaire sat second the outer and tried hard but was blown away when the leader changed gear the run home. Tinker McPhee was eased back to last early but ran on super for third beaten four lengths and she was still eighth and widest turning for home. The filly reached third at the 200m and kept coming but the blatant track bias meant she finished as best she likely ever could in this event. Rocket Spade from fifth the inner reached fourth at the 200m but had every possible chance to be honest and he was beaten six lengths. The rest got beaten over eight lengths and as far as almost thirty-nine lengths. All Black Bourbon ran on late when sixth and the third favourite Not An Option ran a shocking last after suffering cardiac arrhythmia. He settled down second last between runners so was a million to one the way the track bias dominated today but he does seem a colt that is either chalk or cheese. Tasty cheddar or crumbling chalk is as extreme as it gets. Need I Say More is the clear favourite for the G1 2000 Guineas on November 7 and deservedly so.
