Waikato Stud Soliloquy Stakes (G3)
This G3 for three-year-old fillies over 1400m went to all the way winner in De La Terre that has now won four races and all have come here at Te Rapa with three of them sitting second the outer and today's one being when in front. To say she likes the track bias this place offers is an understatement and she won today by a nose in 1:22.29. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were third (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), tenth (six-wide and five lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), led (two-off the inside and a neck from the leader), led (one-off the inside and two lengths clear), fifth (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader) and led (two-off the inside and a neck in front). The track bias as per usual was heavily favouring leaders and on pacers with seven of the nine winners turning for home running first, second or third and of those five actually led turning in. De La Terre led easily early then controlled matters across the top before slipping away the home turn and having good buffer at the 200m. She needed every inch she had pinched as she fell in at the line by a nose. It was her fourth win in eleven starts and her first victory in Blacktype at her sixth attempt having one second placing at G3 to show for it prior. Today was also her first win at 1400m in her second attempt at the trip but to be honest she should have run second. The runner up Kahma Lass after being slow and last away recovered fifth the inside and then lost her spot to be seventh the inner across the top, She then surged through fourth at the 200m and reached second at the 100m coming before missing out by a nostril at the line. It was only the third start for Kahma Lass and to be honest she could be unbeaten in three starts instead of having a one win and two second record on her resume. Tokorangi ran on potently for third and looks a filly with some real scope too. She ran a cracking close up fourth at G3 resuming this season beaten just over half a length and then today ran third, also at G3, beaten just over a length and a half. The filly raced seventh between runners and was eighth surrounded across the top to home turn before being angled wider to seventh at the 200m. The way she unleashed augurs well for her future and from fifth at the 100m she was strong and really found the line to get third the last 5m. Kelly Renee ran an honest fourth after racing up second the outer and then being third at the 200m. Babylon Berlin the favourite from the trail had every chance and whacked away for fifth beaten over two lengths. She actually momentarily reached second at the 200m. Sweet Anna ran on well from being a length last on settling and she is crying out for more ground Prior to today she had run second at G3 after racing second the outer so can perform almost no matter where she settles in the running but Te Rapa is as biased a track as there is in New Zealand and everyone knows it. Dragon Queen ran seventh beaten three lengths but raced sixth wide and then went up third wide midrace, so the effort was actually very good. She should have dropped away but instead dug deep and refused to give in. Taroni settled back and poked through on the inside the run home but had no dash really and was disappointing. Atishu, the second equal favorite and still a maiden, finished ninth beaten over four lengths and never got into the race and was second last turning for home. She never ran on once angled widest at the 200m and while she plugged away, the flop was put down to the footing being too firm by her rider, which seemed to be a common theme for many of the beaten well backed runners all day. Escudo got back and wide and plugged away while Bonita Aurelia was last in a gap and stopped after racing fourth the outer early. Track bias won this Blacktype event and cost the runner up the win. Some of fillies in this are much better than they showed or could have shown today looking at the track. As usual the main factor at Te Rapa today was track bias, as it almost always is.
