This G3 Open Handicap over 1400m saw the backrunning 5yo mare Coventina Bay bury her rivals carrying the minimum of 53kg for her sixth win from just ten starts. It was her second outing at Blacktype having being a Listed second prior too today. Coventina Bay was last the outer midrace and eighth turning for home wide before unleashing the deepest at the 300m. She may well have hit the front too soon having led at the 100m as the mare then held on at the line to score by just a long head in 1:21.36. Second home and really pushing late was Pris De Fer, which raced seventh the outer and poised to the home turn before surging to the lead at the 200m only to be headed by the winner at the 100m. The fact this 5yo gelding fought back and hard to the line was no surprise at all as he did run a clear favourite in this field. Vigor Winner ran on well for third but was over three and a half lengths away at the line, after settling sixth the inner and then being wide turning for home.' The Australian bred 5yo gelding has won only four races but he found the line well in this and he has a decent Blacktype record. He is a G3 winner (first equal) here at Te Rapa and has a G2 second in an Open Mile at Riccarton and a G2 second as a 3yo at Trentham to go with his third at G3 both at Hastings and here today at Te Rapa. The form around his Group placings reads rather well in the main. Burgundy Belle, the stablemate of the runner up ran a sound fourth after settling fifth the outer while Mascarpone carrying 1kg overweight finished fifth beaten almost five lengths. He sat second the outer and led turning for home only to be headed and wilting the closing 200m. Hay Tiger ran on well from last across the top and came wide out at the 200m to be beaten just over five and a half lengths. Motivation was just fair while Julius flopped after racing third the inside and fourth across the top. Julius worked off before the home turn but had nothing left the run in and finished eighth beaten seven lengths, which was put down to him not liking horses on his outer. The now 9yo has not paid a dividend in three runs this time in and age may be catching up with him although the Sprint depth in New Zealand ensures he will be kept going bar any injury. Dawn Patrol stopped and ran a shocker after leading up while The Mitigator also compounded after racing fourth the outer and then moving up wide before the home turn. This was a solidly run 1400m and the bigger weights did greatly affect the proven brigade at the line.
