This G3 Open Handicap over 2400m went to the upsetter Ocean Billy at $22 and he was ridden by the apprentice Callum Jones. The 5yo gelding had the hardest run in the race but proved too good winning by half a length in 2:26.89 for his sixth win from just eighteen starts. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader), led (one-off the inside and led by two lengths), third (five-off the inside and four and a half lengths from the leader), second (three-off the fence and a neck from the leader), eighth (six-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), fifth (four-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and a half a length in front), led (two-off the inside and a length in front) and second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader). Ocean Billy was winning his first Blacktype event at his fourth attempt and of the three prior attempts he has a G2 third over a mile as well. In his two other Blacktype events he was not disgraced in finishing seventh both times at G1 and G3. He has rarely run a poor race and only very wet ground seems his negative at the moment. Today he was wide and working forward and led midrace after doing some work to get there and the apprentice on top did not ease at this point and instead dropped the hammer harder. The gelding kept going the run home and was too good and ran slick time so everything had its chance to be fair if good enough. Savy Yong Blonk the clear cut favourite ran on well from twelfth surrounded to be seventh and wide at the 600m then came up deeper to fourth turning in. She ran on well to be second at the 200m but had her chance to bury the winner it needs to be said. Sherrif ran on well also for third after being tenth the outer then wide midrace with cover before coming up eighth and wider turning for home. He ran on well to reach third at the 1000m and was a length and a half away from the winner at the line. Masetto was a sound fourth after settling down ninth the outer surrounded and then coming up wider to seventh turning for home. He fought on well to grab fourth the final 10m. Fifth home and quite brave was Paisley Park, which shared the lad wide early before settling second the outer and was chasing the eventual winner across the top. He was still third at the 200m and fought well to be beaten just over two lengths. Last years winner Justamaiz shared the lead the inner early then led outright before being headed by the eventual winner midrace and settling third the inner. He was fifth turning for the home the inside and fought well for sixth to be beaten two and a half lengths. Seventh home was Vee Cece and the Australian bred settled well back and wide but found the line well and was still tenth at the 200m and ninth at 100m. He was beaten two and a half lengths and was not bad at all for just a three-win galloper. Eighth home and beaten three lengths was Grand Bouquet that ran on well from thirteenth at the 600m. Another to run home well was the ninth finisher Yatima that settled well back and wide with cover and was still eleventh at the 100m but found the line to be beaten less than four lengths. Spring Delight was tenth home and somewhat disappointing after racing fourth or fifth the inner and getting off before the home turn and moving up third as they straightened up. The mare never kicked on and was ordinary to be beaten almost four and a quarter lengths. A gap then was found to eleventh and further back and all of them weakened from either being handy or dropped away after settling back. Last home was Roger That, the G1 Auckland Cup (3200m) winner from March 7 carrying 55kg that day at $40. He had 60gk in this and was beaten from a midfield the inner spot near the home turn and ended up beaten by seven and a half lengths. To show how far he has fallen he started today at $44 in a G3 and until he gets some genuine weight relief he looks a perennial victim. This was a fast run race and the time of 2:26.89 is slick in the modern era as the track record is held by The Filbert of 2:24.91 set way back in 1986. The Filbert is of course the forgotten runner that finished a cracking third in that epic Bonecrusher versus Waverley Star Cox plate.
