This Listed Open Handicap over 1200m did not draw a very strong field and the winner came from last turning for home in Grand Mayson, which was recording his fifth win in twenty-seven outings. He powered through the field up the middle and scored by a nose in the unrealistic time awarded of 1:07.93. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were fifth (on the fence and two and a half lengths from the leader), ninth (one-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader), fourth (three-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), led (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), fourth (on the inner and two lengths the leader), co-leader (one-off the inside), tenth (four-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), led (six-off the inside and a neck in front) and fourth (six-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader). Grand Mayson last won a race before today in a Benchmark 82 on March 22 last year so it has been a long time between drinks and his win before that came in August of 2019. He has won on all types of footing and today was his first win from the back as he usually races close up to the home turn. Today was also his first try Blacktype and resulted in a win. Second home and beaten a lip was Roch 'N' Horse, a 4yo mare that has won two races and was having just her sixth outing today. She raced back and wide then powered home late to just miss. Obviously it was her first Blacktype outing and she was ridden by an apprentice too plus her effort showed the lack of depth in this field. Both her wins (which came on debut and at start three) came from on the pace or just behind it. Puysegur, an Australian bred, sat wide fifth the whole way and moved up and led briefly at the 300m but was outfinished the last 10m. He fought hard and went down two noses as the favourite. Fourth home and beaten less than three-quarters of a length was Romantic Lady that was ridden back eighth and got angled wider across the junction to the home turn. The 4yo mare ran third favourite and was held up at the 400m but came with a big finish once into clear air wider. Fifth home was Johnny Jones, the 8yo South Islander, that led up was headed at the 200m but fought well to be swamped the last 20m. The second favourite was sixth home in Live Drama with the South Islander going for five wins in a row but coming up short here after being second the outer on settling. He fought on to be beaten just under two and a half lengths. Next home was Rock 'N' Affair that raced fourth the inner and battled away to be beaten just over three lengths for an apprentice rider. Molto Veloce was eighth home but was a total forgive fresh up as she never got any clear air the run home when having heaps to offer. The 5yo mare was resuming and had won a trial prior well but was as stiff as a board so to speak today. Enzo's Lad, a dual G1 winner here and Australian bred, ran second last but never really got much room after racing eighth and being last at the 200m. He was beaten just over four and a half lengths but the rider had realised today was not his day regards clear air the closing 100m. Last home and beaten less than five lengths was Kapinos with the three-win galloper racing sixth and then being wide turning for home and not finishing off his race. This was a sub-standard Listed race and the result was skewered too. The two runners having their first outings at Blacktype formed the quinella but it was more a matter of clear air ruling the day. Molto Veloce never saw daylight the whole run home when having heaps to offer. The third and fourth finishers should have formed the quinella but the former was wide working and the latter got clear late out deeper. You could run this race several times and come up with a different winner.
