Well Written v Autumn Glow: Which emerging star is better?

There has been a lot of excited talk surrounding Well Written in the wake of her devastating win on the weekend.

The Stephen Marsh-trained filly, owned by powerful stable Yulong, smashed her rivals by six lengths in the $1.5m Karaka Millons under Matt Cartwright at Ellerslie to make it five from five in her career to date.

Immediately there have been comparisons to Arrowfield’s unbeaten mare Autumn Glow who has won eight from eight for master trainer Chris Waller.

For all the Well Written well wishes, however, bloodstock guru Guy Mulcaster implied that it would be one-way traffic in a hypothetical match race.

“They all get excited,” Mulcaster laughed on SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.

“We’re dealing with an Autumn Glow that has won eight in a row already and they’ve already got her getting beat by this Well Written.

“Well, we’ll see…”

Host Gareth Hall threw out the possibility: “Why doesn’t Mr Messara (Arrowfield) and Mr Zhang (Yulong) put up some money and we’ll have a (match race).

“You’d need a pace maker…”

Mulcaster: “So, what, we’re going to have J-Mac (James McDonald) on Autumn Glow and who are they going to use?”

Hall: “Matty Cartwright. Can’t be that hard, he just has to follow J-Mac.

“He’s done nothing wrong…”

Mulcaster: “No, he’s done nothing wrong but I’m just saying if it’s a match race what would happen.”

We’ll probably never know who will win, but boy oh boy was Well Written impressive on the weekend.

Cartwright was glowing in his appraisal of the Written Tycoon filly immediately after her Ellerslie romp.

“The best horse I have ever ridden, this horse is an absolute weapon,” he said.

“It’s so exciting as we got the right run, we got through and wow I nearly fell off the back of her.

“She was very keen today but I have always wanted to ride her with cover as she just drops her head relaxes and shows that good turn of foot.

“I think we have seen a very special win today. I’m speechless and I think she is right up to Australia’s best.”
