Parker: Walsh brilliance exposes brutal Broncos reality

By Corey Parker

Reece Walsh and the Brisbane Broncos are going for back-to-back premierships in 2026.

There's been talk over the summer about the Broncos being the hunted and that people are going to want to knock them off their perch.

This is not a personal thing on Reece Walsh, but we have to look at what his involvement is from the football side.

I don't think I've seen a more dominant display in the last eight rounds of a competition than we saw with Walsh in 2025 - which has me concerned.

If he can't reach those heights again, then can the Broncos go on and do what they need to do?

I'm in defence of Reece here, I want the rest of the team to be able to continue to do their job and not have to rely on the just individual brilliance of one player, because he's not going to get there for long periods of time over the course of 27 rounds.

If he could play a 9 out of 10 game across all 27 then boy-oh-boy, it would be like something you've never seen before.

Last week I named him as the number one player in the competition; in those last eight games in 2025 he had 12 try assists, 22 line break assists, 6 line breaks.

That's not including the try saving tackles that he's come up with and all the other brilliance. My concern is that there will be ups and downs and ebbs and flows throughout the course of the season.

I certainly hope the Brisbane Broncos can go back-to-back, they absolutely have the team to do it but everyone needs to play their part.

Think back to the Hull clash where at one stage the Broncos were 30 points to 4 down before they clicked into gear it was embarrassing.

Reece Walsh was at the forefront or the fight back.

My concern is the Broncos have to reach those levels on a consistent basis and for long periods of time.

In 2025 they found a way into the top four and it was largely off the back of Reece Walsh’s brilliance.

Yes, there was a lot of other players, but they don't win those games without Reece.

Hypothetically speaking, if Walsh wasn't playing for Brisbane, where do they sit?

Where do punters have them sitting?

If Reece Walsh gets injured, where are they going to be?

The Broncos are now the hunted, and I want to know the mindset of all the players.

What is Reece Walsh going to produce? Will it be a 9 out of 10 every week?

Probably not. Do we want it to be? Yeah, absolutely. Is he striving for that? Absolutely he is, but if he doesn't get there, someone else needs to pick up the slack and run with it a bit.

They've got all their motivations this season aside from going back-to-back; Adam Reynolds is retiring and Payne Haas is moving on.

I just hope they don't rely on the individual brilliance of Reece too much, because it's wonderful to have a player of his ability, but if we rely on it too much it might not turn out the same as last year.

I love Reece. I love everything he's able to do.

Do the Broncos win without him?

Absolutely not.
