Why Seibold was the perfect coach for Foran to follow

It’s only been one game, but Matty Johns has already noticed a major difference in the way Manly plays under Kieran Foran.

After losing their first three games and parting ways with coach Anthony Seibold last week, the Sea Eagles responded in a big way under the interim coach on Thursday night.

In his first match in charge, Manly comfortably defeated the Dolphins 52-18, with their forward pack dominating the run game compared to their opponents.

Reflecting on their win, Johns believed that Foran’s ability to get his side playing with emotion - something which they lacked under Seibold - was the difference in their performance.

“They played with emotion,” he explained on SEN’s Morning Glory with Matty Johns.

“Every coach has their strengths. One of the things Anthony Seibold is very good at (is) educating a team on football.

“But he's got the propensity to over-coach, and he's very pragmatic. He's not a (coach) who really gets in there and gets his side up before games.

“But he's the perfect guy to follow in if you're Kieran Foran, because he's put a lot of things in place.

“Kieran Foran walks in, and he's just got the respect. He knows how to get players up for games.

“I just saw that difference last night, just that sprinkle of emotion in their performance.”

One of the players who had a noticeable difference for Manly was Hamoule Olakau’atu.

The second rower was dominant, running for a game high of 268 metres with 123 of those coming post contact, which saw him score a try.

This led Denan Kemp to be in disbelief in his turnaround from last week’s loss to the Roosters, where he only ran for 98.

“I can't believe the difference (in performance) between Olakau’atu,” Kemp said.

“Like last week and this week, he looked like the greatest edge backer in the history of mankind last night.

“He was unstoppable.”

The Sea Eagles’ next match is against the winless Dragons next Friday at WIN Stadium.

SEN League will have live coverage of the match beginning from 5pm AEST across SEN’s radio network and on the SEN app. Kick-off is at 6pm.
