“I’m sorry”: Flanagan’s response to booing fans as pressure mounts

Shane Flanagan has apologised to Dragons’ fans for his side’s disastrous 32-0 loss as pressure mounts on the underfire coach.

St George-Illawarra players were booed off the field by home fans on Saturday night, while they also lost captain Clint Gutherson with a hamstring injury during the match.

The Dragons have slumped to a historic low, losing their first five matches of the season for the first time since St George and Illawarra merged in 1998.

Saturday’s 32-0 loss to the Cowboys was the side’s biggest of the season thus far, and with pressure mounting on Flanagan following nine straight losses dating back to 2025, the coach’s future is under heavy fire.

Flanagan had no answers in the press conference, only able to offer apologies to the Dragons’ faithful.

Kick off with Brandy and Jimmy Yarn Banner

“It's not good enough. (I) completely understand. It's not good enough and I completely understand,” Flanagan said post-match.

“I got no excuses to put out there. I got to find out why and that's my job over the next couple of days to find out why but yeah, (it’s) not good enough and I fully understand.

“We looked like we didn't know each other at some different stages. (We) put passes behind each other, (the) lack of cohesion was very disappointing.

“I'm not trying to cover over anything… I'm very very very disappointed with the performance. I haven't got the answers for you right now. I’ve got to find them quickly.

“There's some new players in there and important parts of the team. As I said, I'm not making excuses, I fully understand the frustration. I’m as frustrated as anyone.

“It's a big club, 0-5 hasn't happened before.

“All I know is I can just do my best and that's what I do every day when I go to work, making sure that we prepare the team the best we can. It hasn't worked so far this year but I'm not going to give up.”

SEN’s Justin Horo believes a loss to Manly on Thursday could spell the end of Flanagan.

“There's not anyone out there on the market like that so that could at least buy Flanno (Flanagan) a couple extra weeks,” Horo said on SEN NRL Crunch Time.

“They can't lose to Manly, no way. In fact, I'm almost of the belief now that we're talking about it… they have to win for him to keep his job.”

Flanagan is expected to make changes to his side for Thursday’s crucial clash with the Sea Eagles, with Trai Fuller a possibility to join the side immediately from The Dolphins.

Fuller would slot right in for the injured Gutherson, while other Dragons’ players have come under fire for their poor performances,, including halfback Daniel Atkinson who was criticised by SEN’s Andrew Voss on X for what he considered “a prime contender for the worst kicking performance by a team in the history of the game”.

In the press conference, Dragons’ co-captain Damien Cook echoed the sentiments of his coach, attempting to deflect the mounting pressure from his coach back onto the playing group.

“It's all us players. We're the ones out there,” Cook said.

“You've seen what our game plan can do in the first few rounds and tonight was just bad. So, it's all us in the playing group. We need to have a hard look at ourselves, make sure that we're all individually doing our job better because we've shown at times that it works against some top teams.

“What we tossed up tonight was just bad and it's disappointing but you know, we're getting everything we need and we're just not performing. We didn't perform tonight.

“There's been times in games where we've lost it in the last 20 (minutes). It's hard and… we're the reason and we just got to keep working harder.

“But big big sorry to the fans. I mean that.”
