“Special to witness”: Cornes and King marvelled by Daicos’ 100th
By Lachlan Geleit
Kane Cornes and David King were blown away by Nick Daicos’ performance in his 100th AFL game on Thursday night, which Collingwood won 88-83 over Carlton.
Already having 26 disposals to his name at three-quarter time as clearly the best player on the ground, Daicos went to the next level in the last as the Magpies entered the term 18 points down.
His early brilliance in the term including a goal 23 seconds into the fourth did all the damage, as the Magpies hit the lead just 5:41 into the quarter which lasted for 35 minutes.
Overall, Daicos won 13 disposals for the term, finishing with a ridiculous 39 touches, eight clearances and a major.
Cornes appreciated seeing greatness live, describing Daicos’ efforts as something ‘really special’, while his SEN Breakfast co-host King pondered whether the Magpies will now use their star magnet inside 50 more often after the damage he did there late.
Cornes: “That was something else, Nick Daicos' last quarter. His full game was pretty good as well, but in the last quarter he went to the next level.
“Michael Voss said after the game, ‘We had a plan for Nick at the start of fourth quarter’. I'd love to know what that plan was. I'd love to, because I know halfway through, (Ollie) Hollands went to him. But that was too late.
“What do you think was the plan? Because I couldn't find one.”
King: “He took him to the deep water, didn't he?
“Once he went forward, it was a poor matchup. They got a lot wrong last night, Carlton.
“(Nic) Newman had to go to him, even (Lachie) Cowan I would have accepted, but Hollands, he's just gettable.
“I know he's done it against Errol Gulden and has been tagging in different roles, but not deep forward, and I just think we're starting to see the tip of the iceberg with Nick deep forward now.
“Coming to the game last night, we went through it on Fox. What's the best Nick for Collingwood?
“I know he can get a stack of footy in the middle. I know he can get a stack of footy at half back, but he’s played 600 minutes over the last three seasons as a forward, and if you just qualify those minutes and rank him, he's ranked the third-best forward in the comp.
“Now I know you can say, ‘Well, he's the best midfielder, and he'd probably be the best half back’, but the hardest spot to impact the game is inside the forward 50, and Collingwood don't have a winner down there.
“As soon as he went down there, the whole forward line looked different. I just wonder whether we'll see Nick now be a 50-50 mid-forward.”
Cornes: “They're worried about their stoppage stuff though, aren't they? Collingwood. No De Goey or no Sidebottom there last night, you can understand why he played majority midfield.
“Then he gets a matchup he likes. He's absolutely red-hot. Keep him on the ground. Don't take him off and let him do the work that he did… and what a tricky spot for any defender to be in that's trying to go with Nick there.
“So, I just marvel at him. There are not enough words to describe him as a player and what he's done in the first 100 games. To see that live firsthand last night, it was just really special to witness what he did when the game was on the line, three goals down.
“That goal that he kicked, he was involved three times the start of the centre bounce. I'm going, this is mind-blowing.
“But I don't think you can be Michael Voss in front up to the board and go, ‘What was your plan? There's one guy that can take this win away from you when you're three goals up, it's Nick.’”
