“This can’t continue”: Port’s $1m man in Cornes’ crosshairs

Miles Bergman must start delivering for Port Adelaide or else risk being dropped to the SANFL.

That is the opinion of Kane Cornes who has put the 24-year-old firmly in the gun following a slow start to season 2026.

Bergman signed a two-year deal reportedly worth $1 million per season last July.

And according to Cornes he’s simply not living up to his price tag.

“What the hell is going on with Miles Bergman is what I'd love to know,” Cornes said on SEN’s Fireball.

“What the hell is going on with Miles Bergman?

“He's lucky to be in the team, to be fair. There were a few teams that wanted him at the end of last year, played some good footy, and we thought he might be a genuine, inside bigger-body midfielder in the shape of a Hayden Young type, right-footed of course.

“That's not been the case. They signed him, I'm told, to a million dollars.

“And he touches the football 13 times a game. What is happening?

“If you play across half-back and you play through the midfield, get me 25 and impact the game. He's gone 12, 10, 13, 11 (disposals in his four games so far this year).

“They started him forward last (week), but I don't think he's been helped by the coach.”

Cornes also let Power list boss Jason Cripps and senior coach Josh Carr have it regarding Bergman.

“This might be the strongest in the gun I've ever had,” he added.

“If he doesn't get 25 this week or 20 plus, put him back to the SANFL and make a real statement. Because this can't continue with what's going on with him.

“This is his last eight games - 17, 13, 12, 14, 12, 10, 13, 11 - and Josh Carr's still picking him, on a million bucks a year.

“So chuck in the list manager Jason Cripps for signing him to that deal, chuck in the coach for putting him forward, but most importantly chuck in Miles for not delivering on the contract that he's paid to play for at this club.

“There are some bizarre decisions happening at that Port Adelaide Football Club.”

The 2-3 Power meet Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium on Saturday evening from 4:15pm AEST.

Bergman averaged 17.7 disposals when he finished sixth in Port’s best and fairest.

Across four games in 2026 he is averaging just 11.5 touches.
