With Kalyn Ponga extending his stay with the Newcastle Knights, Denan Kemp has raised some slight concern over the deal.

On Saturday, Newcastle confirmed that the star fullback has extended his stay with the Knights for another three seasons.

In a club statement, the Queensland representative said he was privileged to extend his stay in Newcastle.

“I feel privileged and proud to know what I’m doing with my future. I’ve extended until the end of 2030, three more years at this club,” Ponga said.

“To lock that in and know I’m still going to be part of the Knights journey, I’m extremely grateful.

“I’ve been here for 10 years and where we are now, the people within it, the direction of the club, the players that are coming through, I know I want to be here.

“Justin has created an environment that everyone wants to be a part of, come in every day and learn and train and get better. He’s obviously a big part of it all as well.

“I want to win a Premiership here and I want to do it so badly. I’ve now got the opportunity to keep chasing that dream and that’s what I see in the near future.”

Reacting to the news on air, Kemp admitted to being caught off guard by the extension.

And while the former Broncos winger has been impressed by his growth within the side, he did express some reservations about the deal, considering his extensive injury history.

"I'm surprised," he said on SEN's Saturday League Kick-Off.

"Does he stay on $1.4 (million) a year? That's the interesting question.

"Everyone knows how good KP is, and I think he's really grown into a leader, which I've just really admired just watching his growth from a young fella coming from the Cowboys to the Knights.

"But the big question is, when you pay a bloke $1.3 million or anywhere close to that million-dollar mark, you want them playing most of the games of the season.

"Anything less than 20 (games a season), it's probably not good."

The Knights will next feature on Sunday against the Panthers at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle.

SEN League will have live coverage of the match beginning from 12pm AEST with NRL Crunch Time. Kick-off takes place at 2pm.
