Did Carlton's second half give Voss some reprieve?

Was Carlton's second-half performance against Brisbane enough to delay Michael Voss' departure from the club?

In a change from the Bluebaggers' usual performances this season, the Blues had a better performance in the second half of the match compared to the first.

Against the Lions on Friday night, Voss’ men clawed a 38-point deficit at halftime to only lose by 11.

With Carlton’s record sitting at 1-8, it does seem inevitable that the club will part ways with its coach of five seasons.

But Gerard Whateley acknowledged that Voss is prepared to continue on as long as he can.

“He is up for the fight,” he told SEN’s Crunch Time.

“I know that he's insulated himself from the outside conversation, so he's largely oblivious to the idea that it's when, not if, and he has had a really stoic mindset around I'm not coaching for my job.

“He's been firm on that from before the season started through to now; he has identified the clear purpose of what he's coaching for, and the second half was proof of that.

“He demanded probably as forcefully as he ever has a response at halftime, and for whatever reason, it got through, and he got it.”

And with their second-half turnaround, Kane Cornes believes that it could help delay his departure should they replicate their second-half performance more consistently.

“Particularly when you're not flushed with great depth as it is anyway,” Cornes added.

“You're so reliant on a key group of five, and the key group of five aren't to the level that they were three years ago.

“I used to think their best five was as good as anyone, but (Jacob) Weitering is not that anymore, (Patrick) Cripps is not that anymore, (Sam) Walsh is still at a good level, (Harry) McKay is not that anymore, so I mean it's very difficult.

“He was always going to have a difficult task this year, but it just can't be one and eight. That's the problem.

“At some point, you're gonna have to win, and you're gonna have to win against teams that you should be beating.

“St Kilda, you should be beating, or at least highly competitive against these sides. No one expected them to go to Brisbane and win. So that was a birdie last night, that performance, because of expectation.

“If they'd won three games, it's a different conversation than you having had won one in the way that they've done it.

“But you're right, it does buy them a bit of time, if they're gonna be as competitive as that last night.”

The Blues will look to break their seven-game losing streak next week when they face the Western Bulldogs on Saturday at Marvel Stadium.

SEN will have live coverage of the match from 7:20pm AEST across our radio network and on the SEN app, with the match beginning at 7:35pm.
