Cornes: Why Butters should have been suspended for bump
By Nicholas Quinlan
Kane Cornes believes that Zak Butters should have been suspended for his bump on Joel Freijah.
During the fourth quarter of their two-point loss against the Western Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval, Port’s interim captain laid a bump on the 20-year-old, which saw him go to ground and receive a free kick.
In the fallout from the Friday night thriller, there was plenty of speculation as to whether the AFL’s most fined player will be given a ban for the action.
But with SEN and Channel 7’s Tom Morris believing that Port Adelaide’s interim captain made contact with the body rather than the head.
“I saw a few media outlets phrasing this as a potential MRO issue, but he bumped Joel Freijah in his chest,” Morris told SEN’s Crunch Time.
“He's lucky cause three or four centimetres up, he would've been in big trouble.
“But he'll have no case to answer for that.”
That would be a sentiment shared by the MRO who decided to take no further action on the incident.
But the 300-game player for Port Adelaide would disagree resulting in a debate with his former coach Ken Hinkley.
Cornes: He should (be suspended).
Hinkley: Oh, come on.
Cornes: He should, this should be a reportable offence.
Hinkley: Get off.
Cornes: This was a ridiculous thing for him to do.
Hinkley: Someone shut his mic down.
Cornes: Now this is the strange thing with our system.
If he was concussed or if there was any issue with Freijah…
Hinkley: But he didn’t hit his head.
Cornes: I reckon he did, Kenny, I reckon he hit his chin.
Morris: There's still got to be force that's excessive…
Cornes: The only thing that determines that is whether the player's concussed or not.
So that's you're either concussed or you're not, you're either suspended or you're not.
This is (a) suspended reportable offence that was a ridiculous thing to do for a player who's had many issues with the tribunal.
I don't love him as much as you, Kenny, but…
Hinkley: He plays on edge and his best footy's played a ferociously and he does get fined, yes.
But he normally knows where the line is, and he got very close last night, but he didn't cross the line.
Port Adelaide’s next match takes place next Friday at TIO Stadium in Darwin where they’ll play the Gold Coast Suns.
