Trade talk: Clubs to circle Walter after another AFL omission

Clubs will begin to knock hard for the services of Gold Coast’s Jed Walter if he remains out of the Suns’ senior side, according to SEN’s Sam Edmund.

The former No. 3 pick has played just four games in 2026, and while he kicked two in three of them, he’s since been overlooked in Round 8 and the Round 9 clash against St Kilda.

Out of contract at the end of the season, Walter is currently refusing to sign a two-year contract which has been offered to him by the Suns.

That prompted Edmund to discuss his future with Kane Cornes and David King on SEN Breakfast, with that duo disagreeing on Walter’s value 34 games and 35 goals into his young career.

Edmund: “Just on the lineups this week, Jed Walter was not picked again.

“He’s just got to play better in Damien Hardwick's mind, but he'd be having a good hard think about where he wants to play his football next year, talking about players who might change clubs.

“Now he's had a two-year contract in front of him for a long time now, and there's been no movement from him or his management.

“I'm not sure there's been a stack of interest at this stage, I'm told, which is surprising.

“There'll always be interest from the west and West Coast, given that’s originally home, but I'd expect some of those Victorian clubs to really knock hard as the weeks and months go on, especially if he remains out of that side.”

Cornes: “The money, the contract is interesting. I think a club would throw ridiculous offers towards him, but what's he worth?”

King: “For Walter?”

Cornes: “Tom Boyd got a million bucks, that's 10 years ago. That's why. They are desperate to keep forwards.”

King: “How did that go outside of that one day (2016 Grand Final)?”

Cornes: “Well, not well, but that's what clubs will do.”

King: “I'm not convinced he'll get the money you're going to throw up now. I'm not convinced.”

Cornes: “I'm certain of it.”

Edmund: “I think he'll get well paid too.”

King: “Tell me the player that he's going to be. Give me a likeness, because I don't see it.”

Cornes: “The upside is Josh Kennedy from the Eagles. That's the ceiling.”

King: “Josh Kennedy, no chance he’ll be like Josh Kennedy.”

Cornes: “He's young, he's a big, powerful forward.”

King: “He can't get a game up there and they're screaming out for a second forward.”

Cornes: “He was pick 2 in 2022, what’s he worth as a pick now?”

Edmund: “I'm not sure. It'd be a couple of first-rounders, I reckon. If I'm Gold Coast, I'd be asking for that, and I think he would be very, very well paid.”

Gold Coast have the bye in Round 7 of the VFL season. Walter’s next chance to play AFL comes when the Suns face the Power in Darwin next Friday night.
