Sliders take the plunge to honour Neale Daniher
By SEN
The 12th edition of the Big Freeze has taken place at the MCG with famous Australians from all different walks of life sliding down for the Fight MND cause.
This year's Big Freeze takes on a special meaning as it's the first that Neale Daniher has not been alive to witness, with the 2025 Australian of the Year passing away two weeks ago.
But his presence would still be felt with Neale's chair remaining at the top of the slide, accompanied by a beanie on the seat.
First to go down the slide was comedian Andy Lee, who dressed up as 'Wizz', a character from his children's book series 'Do Not Open This Book', which proved to be more buoyant than expected.
Children's characters proved to be a continued theme throughout the sliders, with Channel 7 personality Sam Mac suiting up as Australia's most famous blue heeler in Bluey.
Australia's highest-ranking official, the Governor General, Sam Mostyn, paid direct tribute to Neale, having worn a split Melbourne and Essendon jersey to recognise his contributions to both sides as player and coach.
Musician was also a common theme, with former Melbourne captain Nathan Jones putting on his best bucket hat to look like Australian DJ Fisher.
Musician Amy Shark would head down the slide in the costume of the late British singer Amy Winehouse.
And while she might be set to take the stage on Grand Final Day for the pre-match entertainment, Melbourne Vixens superstar Jo Weston had the crowd spinning around, dressing as Aussie pop star Kylie Minogue.
Sports commentator Mark Howard paid tribute to his childhood hero in Jason Dunstall, Gold Medallist from this year's Winter Olympics, Cooper Woods channelled his inner Mick Fanning by donning a rashie and fighting a shark in the ice bath, while Collingwood fans were treated to a happy flashback with Dale Thomas mimicking his former coach in Mick Malthouse, even bringing out premiership captain Nick Maxwell to lift the 2010 Premiership cup.
And to finish the sliding festivities, content creator and host of the Dan Does Footy podcast, Dan Gorringe, proved he was all aboard the Josh Fraser train, having done a half-and-half costume of a Collingwood jersey and Carlton coaching hoodie.
