Lyon’s Rising Star value bet prompts mini plunge

Garry Lyon has identified some value in the Rising Star market.

While Carlton’s Jagga Smith and West Coast’s Willem Duursma head the market at $2.25 apiece with some bookmakers, there is value to be had down the list.

Lyon loves what Smith’s Blues teammate, Harry Dean, has been doing as a key defender in his debut campaign.

He quoted Sportsbet’s odds of $67 on Tuesday morning which were quickly wound in to $41 after a few savvy listeners followed the advice.

“The Rising Star market right now has got two short-priced favourites - $2.25 each of two for Jagga Smith and Willem Duursma,” Lyon said on SEN Breakfast.

“If I had to announce my Rising star winner now - you can argue and disagree - and I think by the end of the year he will keep getting better and better.

“I would be backing the $67 for Harry Dean from Carlton.

“Unfashionable because he’s a backman and we know that all eyes go to the midfield. Go back and study Harry Dean and by the end of the year I’m thinking he will be the Rising Star winner.

“He’s the one I would be voting for right now. He plays on big-name players in key positions in the back half and does a fantastic job.

“I will be going for him. That is over, over, over, over the odds.

“Hopefully the selectors who pick these things look beyond the midfield and identify what it takes for a first-year player to play in a key position.”

Sportsbet now has Smith and Duursma both at $2.25 ahead of GWS' Phoenix Gothard ($10), Essendon's Sullivan Robey ($13), North Melbourne's Cooper Trembath ($34) and Dean at $41.

Lyon felt he found some value in March when he named Gold Coast’s Zeke Uwland at $21 as the main contender to Smith.

But his allegiances now lie elsewhere after Round 13.
