Tasracing's Sunday best bets at Devonport (26/07)

By Matt Reid

The 2025/26 Tasmanian thoroughbred season concludes in Devonport on Sunday with an eight-race program.

It's a slightly later start than the last couple of months, with the first race scheduled for 11:40.

Best Bet

Race 1 – 3. Bruny Boy

Lightly raced 3yo Bruny Boy is on the quick back-up after placing in a blanket finish in Hobart last weekend. He led at a genuine clip there, with the two that finished ahead of him coming from just worse than midfield in a race that changed complexion over the last 100m. Up in distance should suit given he debuted over 1400m, and this map presents less pressure up front on paper. Despite being trained down south, Jessie Bazan’s team generally handles the Devonport synthetic.

Next Best

Race 2 – 13. Brutal Empire

I think Erica Byrne Burke can win the opening two races of the day and put a cherry on a magnificent season. I was against Brutal Empire first-up, but his effort was huge after being caught wide without cover for most of the race. The winner there had a much softer run, and the quinella put a decent margin on third. I like the setup of a late season 2yo against the older horses, and he’ll get an economical run from the inside draw.

Best Value

Race 5 – 3. Zoete’s Rock

After being beaten out of sight at the track on 17 May, Zoete’s Rock has bounced back with three unplaced runs that were much better than they read on paper. Low draws are worth their weight in gold from this starting point, so from barrier 1, Kirra-Lee Lane should be able to settle close enough to make her presence felt late, something that hasn’t occurred in recent times with Zoete’s Rock. The 5yo is very well-weighted with 57kg given this race is easier than what he has been contesting.
