Matt Reid’s Wednesday best bets at Devonport (02/09)

By Matt Reid

The Devonport Racing Club host the Ladbrokes Golden Mile meeting on Wednesday, with the $50,000 feature rescheduled from three weeks earlier.

The track raced very well a week ago, indicating that previous issues are in the rearview mirror.

The first of nine races is set for 11:55.

Best bet

Race 3 – 4. Bella Chinkara

City Wok was a good result for us last Wednesday, but I’m against him here and siding with the second favourite, Bella Chinkara. They both ran in the same race a week ago, with Bella Chinkara going back from a wide gate before rounding the field to finish third. Key here is the pole draw for Bella Chinkara, who should settle much closer to the speed, and she meets City Wok 1.5kg better with Craig Newitt going aboard.

Next best

Race 8 – 2. Coal River

Coal River can continue his progression through the grades and take out the $50,000 Golden Mile. His first-up run at the track and distance was huge, chasing a brutal tempo to finish third, and he franked that by beating a subsequent winner with ease in Hobart. He makes his own luck on the speed, and with 54kg he will be in the race for a long way.

Best value

Race 5 – 4. Harrata

Harrata gets to the right trip third-up after two very good runs to open the prep over an unsuitable 1150m. The wide draw isn’t a huge issue for a horse that generally settles off the speed, with the challenge for Daniel Ganderton to get into the race at the right time to enable him to be in the finish. He looks a solid each-way play on a day where not many races will pay on a third dividend.
