Will Sir Delius struggle in the wet?
By Jasper Cormick
Sir Delius returns to the track this Saturday in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington as the well acclaimed favourite.
Looking to win this race for a second consecutive year, co-trainer with Gai Waterhouse - Adrian Bott joined Gareth Hall on SENTrack & RSN's Giddy Up to discuss his star stallion’s chances.
With heavy rain forecasted for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Flemington will likely be a heavier track, Hall queried Bott on whether this will effect Sir Delius’ hopes.
“No, not at all,” he said.
“He seems to have the ability to handle those conditions.
“If it brings a little bit more stamina into it, I think all those things are just going to play into his favour.”
Jack Turnbull, Assistant trainer with Ciaron Maher Racing, joined Gareth during Stable Mail before Bott, and he disclosed that the likely on pace leader in the race Light Infantry Man would be preferred further back in the field which calls into question: Who will provide the pace in this edition of the Turnbull Stakes?
“He has certainly got the pace to do so, we wouldn’t be afraid of doing that by any means,” Bott said.
“He was forward over the mile and does seem to enjoy a high-pressure race.”
Shaping up to be Sir Delius’ last run before his grand final in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate, Bott suggested the importance of the superstar running to his best this Saturday.
“You would want to be pretty close to your best,” said Bott.
“You want to see a very strong performance on Saturday.”
Sir Delius is quoted at $2.90 for the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes this Saturday.
But looking further to the Group 1 weight for age Cox Plate on the 24th of October at Flemington he carries a price of $3.20 in the futures market.
Bott opted to put his $100 straight on The Euphrates to win in Race 7 at Randwick at $4.60 as his $100 Stable Mail play.
