This G2 3yo only mile saw the second favourite Dragon Leap win narrowly but well and the Australian bred has a bit of size and presence about him. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were third (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fifth (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (six-off the inside and a length clear), second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader), fifth (four-off the inside and six lengths from the leader), fourth (six-off the inside and a length from the leader), third (six-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader) and seventh (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader). Today the entire ten race card was won by favourites or very well backed runners and the longest price all day was $7.80 so the Bookies winced and were gulping Quick-Eze and impersonating paying ATM's while the punters pocketed some post-Christmas cash to pay off the presents. Dragon Leap cost plenty and has always had a monster rap on him and after racing fifth the outer moved up and looked the winner a long way out. He still had to be ridden out hard to grab the lead with 50m and clocked 1:34.86 to win by a long neck and record his second race success in three starts, with his only defeat so far coming to the filly Two Illicit that won today at G2 against her own sex two races earlier. If he had not run about and out badly late he would have won at Listed level in his second start and today got his Blacktype win deservedly. The runner up Riodini ran favourite surprisingly and raced second chasing a clear leader, which was paying $37, and then moved up and in fact led at the 150m but could hold out the stronger bodied Dragon Leap. Riodini coming into today had won his first four races and the latter came at G3 level but forget the time of 1:21 he was given at Ellerslie as it simply was not true. All races were manually timed at this December 7 meeting as the electronic timing system could not be used today due to an electrical fault and to allow this time to be awarded is ludicrous fake news. Manual timing is like voting by mail in that you get misleading figures by vast amounts! Riodini would race once more and run a distant third at G1 against his age group over the mile. He has since joined the Gai Waterhoiuse and Adrian Bott yard in Sydney, Australia. Star Of Bombay sat third throughout and lodged a bid at the 200m before fighting on okay to record her first Blacktype placing. ' The filly at her next start would win at Listed level and in one more start after that finish fourth at G2. Sherwood Forest had last raced when third at G1 over a mile behind Catalyst, so today the Australian bred was first up in six weeks. He raced fourth on the inner and one-batted the run home to be beaten just under four lengths. His improvement to come followed with a 2200m win against the older horses showing his stamina credentials and then came a third at G2 over 2100m (winner was Dragon Leap) followed by a win in the G1 NZ Derby (2400m). He would race twice after that in Australia and run a disappointing seventh of thirteen runners beaten over seven and a half lengths in the G1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and was just as poor when eighth of eleven runners beaten over eleven lengths in the G1 Australian Derby (2400m). Holy Mongolemperor ran a good fifth and was warming up appreciably late while the clear leader Our Creed weakened to be beaten just over four lengths. At his next start Our Creed would lead up and run fourth at G1 over a mile behind the filly Travelling Light and then would puncture in the Karaka Million 3yo Classic and run last of thirteen beaten over twenty-one lengths. There was a gap back to the last trio home beaten over seven lengths and up to over twenty-one and a half lengths, which were all outclassed. This race saw the depth fall away quickly but would provide the winner and fourth finisher in the G1 NZ Derby.
