This G2 Open Handicap mile saw the favourite Pris De Fer win easily carrying 53kg after racing sixth or seventh wide all the way albeit with cover. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were third (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fifth (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), third (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), led (six-off the inside and a length clear), second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader), fifth (four-off the inside and six lengths from the leader), fourth (six-off the inside and a length from the leader), third (six-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), second (three-off the inside and a neck from the leader) and seventh (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader). Pris De Fer had shown scope as a 3yo but needed that extra strengthening up time and returned a 4yo with the power and will to start consistently winning. He came into today on a hattrick of wins and made it four in a row by two lengths in 1:34.59, which was only the second fastest mile today with the last race, a Ratings72 (five grades inferior at least) won by the mare Vichy clocking 1:34.52. Vichy has not won another race since in three starts but did place twice and one of those was a Listed third. Pris De Fer was winning his fifth race in eleven starts and recording his first Blacktype win or placing for that matter having had three goes as a 3yo. He would win five races in a row with a G3 success after today then run a game second at G1 under WFA over a mile before a solid fifth at G1 over 2000m at WFA. He looks too have it all ahead as a 5yo now he has shown WFA holds no fears in New Zealand and he can clean up staying at home but may well end up having a throw at the stumps in Australia bar the Covid19 chaos permitting. Yearn was a brave second after racing third wide in the open and the 6yo mare really did come of age this season. She would place at G1 and G2 after this. Za Gabor the Australian bred 5yo mare ran on strongly for third and was just a long head from second, after racing eighth surrounded in the running. Pierina ran on very strongly from well back on settling for fourth while the Australian bred Aim Smart was a luckless fifth but a mile looks his limit. Hypnos ran on strongly from well back down the outer for sixth beaten just over two and a half lengths. He was tried three times in Melbourne over the Winter of 2019 and failed each time. The first ten home today were covered by less than four lengths and seventh to tenth saw two near the pace throughout fight on namely Braavos and Contessa Vanessa and two run on well in Secret Allure and Watch This Space. The rest were only fair such The Real Beal and Demonetization but Hello It's Me was downright poor in finishing last beaten ten lengths. This will be a good source of future winners as so many in this were not suited as being either sprinters only or poorly weighted (the top two in the handicaps were mares with Yearn on 59kg and Hello It's Me on 57.5kg). Mares ran second, third and fourth in this with Yearn a brave second but then two on the minimum of 52kg ran third on Za Za Gabor and Pierina. Za Za Gabor carried half as kilo overweight it should be added so had 52.5kg. This was a lightweights finish bar Yearn over the line.
