This Listed Open Handicap mile saw a fresh up middle distance type in Who Dares Wins at $13 bury his rivals to score easily on a heavy track. The winners and where they turning for home in race order were fourth (six-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), sixth (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), seventh (seven-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), third (ten-off the inside and half a length from the leader), third (six-off the inside and half a length from the leader), fifth (fifteen-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), second (ten-off the inside and four lengths from the leader), ninth (last) and (ten-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader) and led (eight-off the inside and a length clear). Who Dares Wins settled down second last and was last turning for home but with heaps to offer and held up plus he was not too far away from the leaders at this stage. The 6yo gelding was angled wider into clear air and sixth at the 200m then swam home rapidly to lead at the 100m and free-styled clear to win by a length and a half in 1:40.47. It was his seventh win in forty-seven starts and interestingly his first at the mile and on heavy footing. Residential was back and wide but came up the deepest turning for home and swam up with purpose to lead at the 200m only to be headed 100m later. Contessa Vanessa the favourite raced handy the outer and was fourth or fifth between runners midrace and across the top before moving into a clear air third turning for home. She had her chance to win but still fought well to finish third and was just under two lengths from the winner at the line. Flying Sardine raced third wide and came up second turning for home before the effort told and she ended up fifth beaten over three and a half lengths. Gallant Boy the deep Southerner raced fifth then turned for home second last before coming through to fourth at the 250m. He battled away okay for fifth and was only half a neck behind fourth. Koxinga was seen to be running on late from seventh albeit beaten just under five lengths. The rest got beaten six and a half lengths and up to almost eight and a half lengths. This was a weak Listed field overall with several out of form runners and a trio well and truly out of their grade too. This race would be borderline to retain its current Listed status and only the placegetter mares today may have saved it but for how long is the real question.
