This G2 3yo filly only 1600m saw the favourite Media Sensation, a last start G1 1000 Guineas winner, run a shocking last beaten over thirty seven lengths while a $33 shot narrowly beat an $18 shot. The dreadful holding Heavy10 footing presented at Ellerslie played havoc all day with results and margins of defeat and this was no exception. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were fifth (four-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), third (three-off the inside and a length and a half from the leader), seventh (nine-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), eighth (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fifth (three-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), tenth (five-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), fourth (six-off the inside and a length from the leader), led (four-off the inside and two lengths clear), second (ten-off the inside and one length from the leader) and led (eight-off the inside and neck in front). The inside lanes were no go slow areas and too wide out was a non-winning section so the middle sector came up trumps all day. Pinmedown, a last start maiden winner, was in the rear trio on settling and then unleashed the widest runner to reach fifth at the 200m coming then third at the 100m before leading with 25m to go. It was sustained surge to score by long neck in 1:39.91 and record her second win from five starts and obviously her first Blacktype success. House Of Cartier, also a last start maiden winner, ran a big second after being wide in the rear trio then sent forward deeper before the home turn. The Australian bred filly like the winner came with a sustained run to go from seventh turning in to third at the 300m and second at the 100m. She led at the 50m briefly only to be outfinished the final 25m but it was every inch as good a run as the winner if in fact a tad more meritorious. Queen Of Diamonds, the second favourite, moved up outside the leader on settling and then took the front at the 300m and looked to be holding at the 150m only to be bombed the final 50m. Musical Blues ran a game fourth after racing eighth wide then sixth wide albeit with cover and moving into fifth deeper turning for home. Espresso Martini led up but once headed at the 300m wilted and ended up fifth beaten almost four and a half lengths. Rip Em Up ran on okay late but the maiden filly still does a lot wrong in the running. The rest got beaten nine lengths or more and never copped the footing with Media Sensation the biggest shock in the race stopping the run home badly and tailing the field home by a massive margin. The result looks iffy as too many flopped big time so the track suited some and aided others by a significant amount but also left many unable to lift at all and far too many runners found reverse gear today. There will be numerous future winners out of the race and on better footing that seems a certainty but just how draining this ground presented at Ellerslie today really was will unfold in the new few weeks. Too many runs on ground like that today would flatten any thoroughbred let alone 3yo fillies not halfway through their season yet.
