Panthers legend: Why Luai will quit Tigers for PNG

After Jarome Luai was sighted in Papua New Guinea, Greg Alexander has given his thoughts on whether the Wests Tigers captain will leave for the PNG Chiefs.

On Sunday, the Rugby League rumour mill was sent into overdrive after the 29-year-old was spotted in various places around Port Moresby, leading to plenty of speculation about his future with his current side.

Currently, the four-time premiership player has a get-out clause that allows him to leave at the end of the season.

That expires on April 30 (Thursday), meaning Luai could potentially agree a deal with the Chiefs for 2028 whilst still opting into his player option for 2027 at the Tigers.

And given the tax-free exemption that the PNG Chiefs can offer, which would blow any rival offer out of the water, the Panthers legend believes that it is more likely than not for Luai to join the NRL's 19th side.

“Well, apparently, he's got until April 30th,” Alexander explained on SENQ Breakfast.

“Which is only a few days away, to not only agree to continue with the Tigers for next season, but if he wants to be part of the line-up for the PNG Chiefs, he has to sign a contract with them before that time.

“It sounds very odd, but if you weren't serious (about leaving), you're not flying to PNG.

“So, I thought I'd just check out what the temperature was yesterday. It was a balmy 32 (degrees) and 97% humidity.

“So, if he can wrap his head around that, I think Jarome Luai might be their marquee signing.

“I've just got a feeling that for a man that has won four premierships, played Origin, been in winning Origin series, played test matches for Samoa.

“I just think that he might be the man that they signed first.

“And the tax-free dollars, he's on $1.2 (million) now. They won't sign him for any less than that.

“So, if you're signed a three or four-year deal, which is a long haul if you're gonna live in PNG for the majority of it.

“But you finish your career, he's 29 now. He would be 32 or 33 if he signs a three or a four-year deal because that's life-changing money.”

The PNG Chiefs don’t formally enter the competition until 2028.
